Yeah I imagine it is.

Look at your cards.

Look at the cards on the table.

Think, 'This could win!' and stick money in

or

Think, 'Shit, I'm f**ked!' and stick money in so no-one can tell you're f**ked/

or

Fold.

Thing i don't get about online poker is, there's none of the working out if someone's lying or not, seeing as how you can't see them.

Not quite - you get dealt your hole cards, then you decide if you want to call the blinds (the two people to left of the dealer have to put in a small blind and a big blind, in order, to get betting going. So, say the blinds were $10/$20, the person to the dealer's left would put in $10, then the person to their left would put in $20. The next person along can then either fold, or call, or raise), then you get to see the 'flop' which are the next 3 cards. Then the 'turn', then the 'river', with a round of betting after each.

Thing i don't get about online poker is, there's none of the working out if someone's lying or not, seeing as how you can't see them.

In a way, yeah, which is partially what I don't like about online play in that I've learnt to read people alright from tells, etc. Plus it's just not quite the same socially and the like. But yeah, you can tell from how people bet and more importantly when what sort of hand they have. It's just little tells that can give you a shitload of info you miss out on.

Yeah, that's basically what I mean. If you've put a £5er into a game at a local pub or whatever, you're less likely to be a twat and mess the game up for everyone else. But yeah, it's just not quite the same as sitting down and talking with people, in much the same way I'd rather be in the kitchen talking to my flatmates rather than talk to them on Facebook.

Yes and no. I play a lot of poker I'll be pretty honest, usually at invite only nights, and occassionaly down the cassino. I don't think i get any real tells at these events, i mean you can get an incling about what there doing and if you have them up in a corner or not, i.e me calling half my chip stack the other day with queen high and winning when i needed to. But most of the players i play are 30+ f**ked up gamblers, and although you can get a slight read I wouldn't trust myself to act like a tool against them.

As a complete contradiction at school i always win (without being bigheaded) just because once folded people look at other peoples cards and in genral there all f**king retards, for example the other day raising massivly under the gun with AK hit nothing, but raised 5 pounds pre, and flop checked the turn, he raised 20 quid and i had the confidence to call because of him, he didn't say anything he didn't move, i could just tell he was dead uncomfortable and trying to get out of paying me money he didnt have, he had AQ happy days

Online poker is gash, your always playing "the man" you think the computers always out to wrong you, the last card will always f**k you up etc. i just don't have much trust, its alright for low stakes tournaments and stuff though i suppose, i think its impossible to play poker seriously for 0 money, even 10 pound gay games at the snooker call i treat as jks, you know what i mean, the stakes have to be high enough to get your heart racing, but low enough to keep your legs

what type of poker does everyone play on here.

We have horse games every now and again where the dealer just calls out a type of poker and we play it for that hand, but usually Texas Hold 'em.

Simps - it's not even dead give-away tells I'm talking about, just stuff like the bits on here. Just minor stuff. Like if a flop comes out all diamonds, and someone checks their cards, then bets big, almost every time they won't have a flush, just possibly be on a flush draw. It's right the majority of the time, so if they miss their draw you can take their money.

Yea i do know what you mean, you can read almost everything someone does, face when seeing cards, what chips they bet with (small currency chips there weak trying to make their stack still look impressive, big chips shows dominance) etc etc... its all about not being too consistent in your playing style

Yeah, totally. There was actually a pretty sweet interview in the new issue of Sidewalk about this guy who's a semi-pro skateboarder but who's also a poker player. Just does online stuff, but makes a shitload most days, wins a lot of big tournaments, etc.

Yea i know someone who's got a maths degree but makes a living playing online poker. He buys into tournaments which have a really low entrance fee but thousands of people, most people get bored after an hour or so where realistically you need to sit there for a good 7+ hours to get near the end and win a big pot. And because its low entrance if you lose its not any big deal just a waste or time, so its very low risk. He likes it can play all through the night, have days off etc. seems alright, not my thing though

Nothing beats playing poker with friends; we do it regularly.

Occasionally we play for money, or usually just chips (we have one of those 6000 piece chip sets) and its a right laugh.

The online cards is good for fake money, I enjoy playing people on here, simply because its relaxing, costs me nothing and its generally a good way to socialise. :)

  • 2 months later...
i'm going to play hold'em in a casino for the first time today... any advise?

Don't expect to win. In all reality it all depends on how many chips you start with and how many people play, I've been against over 120 people at the cassino and i got payed out for playing well. If you deep stack then sit be patient, top pair means your miles behind and don't think about going in with much less than A-10 suited, expect to play till the early hours and maximise the good hands you get, if you bluff, bluff convincingly depending on who your playing could be smallish raises all the way, which risks them hitting or bet big and hope for the best.

If you don't start with many chips and not many people go pretty mad, if you hit top pair your probably in good shape, bet big early then sit as chip leader and ride it out just putting BB in till you get in money winning position then go mad and use your chips to bully.
