python_man
sorry another tolerences topic.i was having a ponder and wondering if 26 wheels could take more punishment, obviously i dont ride 26 but anyone who has ridden both what are your thoughts or experiencesnickplease close if its a repost
King C
I think that technically mod wheels are stronger but only If the wheels were exactly the same but just scaled down ie the same rim but smaller, similar hubs, same spokes, same spoke tension, same built pattern etc.Im proabaly wrong and talking crap but meh.I've finished my exams and Im bored. The tires are also beefier on top of that
PaRtZ
isnt the theory similar to grabbing a long bar with 2 hands and bashin it on your knee and then grabbing a shorter bar and bashing with the same force and seeing which one bends more?sorry its a bad explanantion but meh my brain cant do any better
Phil H
isnt the theory similar to grabbing a long bar with 2 hands and bashin it on your knee and then grabbing a shorter bar and bashing with the same force and seeing which one bends more?sorry its a bad explanantion but meh my brain cant do any betterNot quuiiite because most pressure is put on the wheel vertically not hozizontally so leverage isn't really an issue. But I'd have to presume the same, if all the same components were used and the only difference was the diameter of the wheel I suppose a mod wheel would be stronger. It is properly hard to explain but it would be more compact? Phil
Dani.
Obviously a mod wheel would be stronger axially, because the longer radius would allow more leverage over the hub thus 26" wheels should get knocked out of true easier/more often. But radially I can't see what difference the spoke lenght would make (assuming the spokes are perfectly straight).
ManxTrialSpaz
Technically, the fold point of 26" rims will be subjected to larger forces than 20" rims, but I'm not sure whther a larger rim can spread the force evenly around the rim more so than a 20" rim, meaning they both can take the same amount of force? (Theoretically that is *cough*06 Echo rims*cough*)
matt rushton
From my experiances 20" wheels are alot stronger. On a 26" wheel you are forever tightening up spokes and truing wheels (they are same thing really)but with 20" wheels you never have to touch the spokes for coming loose they do get buckled but not very badly. Also 20" rims don't egg as easy.Matt Rushton
