Its alot harder than it looks, naturally some of them are going to be nobs, but you get that with everything now-a-days ? Really i just wondered what you opinions are on road bikes/riders ? N.Wood
I'm pretty nonplussed by them, but one thing that annoys me is when they use the road rather than dedicated cycle paths.Theres a long, straight-ish road near me thats a 40mph limit, and has a dedicated path set away from the road for cyclists. Not only is it there for the safety of the riders (i know i've never done under 45mph on that road, its too long and straight) but also when they're riding at less than 20mph, you have to slow down and try and wait for a break in the oncoming cars to pass them. This pisses me off. They seem arrogant.
Simpson
Its riding on a road... how can it be hard? its just like running, and going round and round in circles.... more fun than trials? i think not!

And as for the speed thing ! i know what you mean ! i was a bit pissed off that i had to ride IN THE ROAD, but you can't really ride anywhere else, those road frame are SERIOUSLY stiff !Have any of you tried it ? it's like riding a motorbike for ages then jumping in a car and saying "god i ride like a dick !" And a bike is totally different from a car. becuase motorbikes are always the ones going faster than cars. push bikes just needlessly slow everyone up

It's a question of awareness and seeing things from a different perspictive ? i had excty the same views before i rode the bike, it really changed how i felt about it.Jarrod

zoo
I'd love to have a proper road bike, for now I just pretend I am ghost rider and dodge cars on my bmx, amazing that i'm still alive really.
Simpson
Yea i'm a lot more agressive on a motorbike than i am in a car... but whats that got to do with anything? you have to put needless physical effort into getting somewhere, with no point just slowing all other people up and making all other road users hating you
guineasmithpig
And commute and xc on my mountain bike. I HATE using cycle paths for the most part of my riding. I use the one for the longer stretch of the trip to uni, but only because I can't keep a decent speed on the mtb gearing. But even then, said long stretch is all cracked and lumpy and generally rubbish. It'd be a nightmare on a road bike. 26 x 1.5 slicks at 50psi are bad enough! Cycle paths are the devil, unless you don't know how to ride a bike properly (90% of commuting cyclists).AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaanyways, I have mucho respect for guys who ride road SERIOUSLY. I know a few lads who compete in national xc and the like, and they put in around 250-300 miles a week for training person. And any mtb'er will grudgingly tell you it really is the best, most accessible means of getting some serious mileage in. You just can't put in that kind of riding time unless you're really lucky. Lawnmowerman
I got a Raleigh sf 1.0 last week and it's absolutely amazing. I have to ride 8 miles to work in the morning along the prom to another town. Doing it on my other bikes was a nightmare, but since I got the Raleigh it's taken about half an hour off my riding time. I can get home in just over 25 minutes with the wind against me. I like trying to beat the records on my computer too, managed to get just over 30mph out of it today haha. III'd imagine these sentiments are wasted on you, but how about not burning up fuel on pointless trips? Petrol doesnt come out of a magic tree you know, one day it will run out and waaaaay before that its gonna get damnably expensive. If people are getting stressed out at being held up for less than a minute by a bike, they need help. One minute in your journey extra. Infact if you're a good driver and the rider is licking along nicely (and looks confident, the main bit) , it takes a very very narrow road not to be able to pass him. If you're bored just going round and round, try doing what every one else does and take a journey to somewhere, its not rocket science. If you're sweating on a short trip, you're unfit or not dressed right. The answers are there, if you can think for long enough to see them. chrishayton
i have a 20 year old steel road bike, and not being funny, it doesnt get hard till your hitting 30 miles. thats with 20 mph average speed over hills ( i live by the pennines. the only killer road that gets me is a road called cragg vale. its 8 miles and all uphill, no flat, just hill, its the longest single assent in europe apparently and its a bitch, takes an hour to go 8 miles lol.and road bikes are fun when you can over take cars doing 30 mph on flat, thats very weird the first few times you do that. i love my road bike i just dont ride it cos its a shed and peopel i know may see me lol

tom e
I obtained a road bike from a man called Stellar Dave at the pub. Some Claude Butler thing, I absolutely love it. Makes riding places effortless, bumpy roads are a bit of a hazard at 85 psi though I'll get a picture soon!
future orange 660
LOL @ simpsons retarded views.road is not just about riding in cricles or anything. its very complicated and chellening. i used to think it was for pussy's, until i tried it and its great. also cycle lanes do not have to be used..and riding them on a road bike is madness. its not illegal either. passing red lights however is, but more fun

MadManMike
Off topic, how bloody annoying is it going down hill on a trials bike - I WANT TO PEDAL. I WANT TO GO FASTER!I just got my g/f a Carrera Kraken, now it's not a road bike, but it's made me want to flog the single speed. I rode hers up past the skate park last night, SO DAMN EASY! first gear, nice slow pedalling with no effort up one of the steepest hills in Hastings. It's a really good bike - £370, Discs, decent gear shifters, metal pedals and all that... really good for the money.
