Feet On Pedals!

Hi, This could sound a bit weird but...

Ive been watching a lot of riding video's lately and iv'e noticed that quite a lot of people have there pedal on the front of there sole of there shoes.

I personally have the pedal in the middle of my shoe, where the dip is.

Where does everyone else have there pedals?

Is it better to have it at the front or what?

Everyone is different, but the marks on the soles of my shoes say i have them right on the balls of my feet.

Basically, look at the sole of your shoe and imagine a line splitting the front from the back in the middle. this should be roughly where the rearward side of your pedal should be.

I always get the feeling my feet are going to slip off when there nearer the front :ermm:

I usualy use the middle/front, but its all persanal preference,

But if you have it on the ball you have more controll becouse you can also use your calf to pivot foot, but if you have your pedal right under your fibular (middle shin bone) then you canot get that much power with the calf and thats what controls the pivot on your foot via ankle, so yeah, personal pref realy.

You can get the most power using the balls of your feet due to it having the most leverage. I personally don't really know, if I looked at my shoes i could tell, but I guess Revell pedals are big enough for me not to worry about foot positioning too much.

If you were riding without shoes you'd move your feet so your big toe is hooked around the front edge of the pedal when you curl it.

Same position with shoes on really too ^_^

It make shopping easier, gives more leverage and allows you to compress more so landings are smoother. Riding with your foot in the middle of the pedal is just plain weird.

Yeah, i thought that having them on the balls of your feet would give you more leverage!

Well, say you've gotten used to riding with the middle of your foot on the peddles. When you get into the supermarket your going to be walking around with all of your foot on the floor, which increases friction and leaves you moving slower and with more effort, so if theres just one item left some old lady with her high heels could get there way before you and you'd be left without anything but being out of breath and cursing your constant use of the entire foot.

Get used to riding on the ball of your foot and you'll be walking lighter which makes you faster and gives less friction, it also leaves you constantly prepared to run to beat old ladies to the last of any item in the store... and all without getting tired from over-exertion.

Getting used to using the ball of your foot also helps make you look a little taller, so more intimidating against the old ladie who might previously have thought about beating you with her handbag for taking what she believed to be hers. The extra height should help to prevent any such thoughts running through her head again.

It also gives you more bounce, so should you really need to get across the store quickly you could ultimately sidehop over the isles as a direct route from A-B is always the quickest. For the brief moment your tucking above the isle as well you'll be able to see the whole store so will be able to find any items you want more quickly.

But then again... maybe it was obvious i'd pressed a random key to make a word that shouldn't be there. Which in itself is quite a conincidence, but not unlikely... as according to the probability theory, which is a branch of mathematics concerned with analysis of random phenomena. The central objects of probability theory are random variables, stochastic processes, and events: mathematical abstractions of non-deterministic events or measured quantities that may either be single occurrences or evolve over time in an apparently random fashion. Some people like einstein and his peers contemplated the theories of probability and coincidence as ways of determining whether all things in life are merely coincidental, or whether there is indeed a formula for the ruling of all things in the universe.. which would include my spelling mistake.

I reckon it was fate for me to press it really, decide for yourself though.. as i'd hate to be accused of mis-informing someone ;)

This is the way i see it: experiment

Feet in Middle of pedles - Place feet on the ground flat , curl your toes up the sky and try jump your highest

Balls of your feet on pedles- Now stand with the heels up of the ground slightly and on your balls of your feet and jump you will jump so much higher and easyer

the achellies is the one strongest muscle in your body so by using the balls of your feet you use the achellies giving you more spring, but if you use the flats of your feet you use only your thighs and not both

As many people have said, the ball is the natural pivot of your foot, is close to your toes which provide balance and this position gives the best possible control and power. Look at the foot position of professional cyclists (road, MTB, DH, track...). Their shoes are made so the clipless pedals are directly under the ball of the foot.
