I'm Moving To Manchester

Unless I screw things up really bad, I'll be starting a job at the University of Manchester this fall. I have lots of questions.

What is the trials scene in Manchester like? How many riders? Are there good rocks and logs around, or is it all urban stuff? How about road and MTB? How about hiking and camping?

I'd like to live no more than 5K from campus. What areas should I avoid living in? (I want to avoid both crime and drunk college kids)

I tentatively plan on biking to work every day. Will my bottom-of-the-line hybrid bike definitely get ripped off? Do I need to find a rusted junker instead?

What are the winters like? Do I have to become a fan of Manchester United? What time does the sun set at the summer/winter solstice? Does your country have socalized healthcare? Do all Brits listen to nothing but techno and do nothing but ecstasy?

Thanks guys!

Where are you from? I get the impression you're not from round here.

Anyway, Manchester's not that bad at all. You can definitely ride your hybrid to work as long as you lock it up somewhere decent - I ride my road bike to uni and leave it locked up with no problems. There are, however, some place quite close to the university that I really wouldn't want to live - Moss side, Hulme (not too bad), Longsight (again, not as bad). Fallowfield, and Withington are the student area (which are ok but there might be drunk students), while Chorlton and Didsbury are the nicer (more expensive) areas where a lot of young professionals live. Most are within 5km of the campus.

The peak district is half an hour drive (or train) away from Manchester and that's great for walking, MTB, camping. And the Lake district is less than two hours away by car. You might have to travel a bit if you want some rocks too, it's mostly street stuff in Manchester. You only have to become a man utd fan if you live in surrey...

Weird questions: At the summer solstice the sun probably sets at 10:30 pm, maybe a bit later. In winter it's probably 4:15 or something? Yes, we have the national health service. It's great

And for the record, I hate techno and I've never done ecstasy.
