-ANT-ONZA-
Hey one and all, looking to do my first grind tomoz so ive prepped the bike.Problem number one: I run maxxis creepy crawler on an onza alex rim......but the tyre and inner tube wont come off with the normal spoon trick. So anyone have any bright ideas? My second problem is thinkiness of blade on the grinder. I can either buy a small one say 4mm thick one or a thicker one at say 8mm. Which will give the best result? Krisboats
I use the 4mm style ones... and just let my tyre down and hold it out the way with the other hand, this takes care though... and no weakling arms.

Krisboats
Not really, i prefer the smaller ones because its quicker to sharpen them up on something. The thicker ones being thicker, obviously take longer.
-ANT-ONZA-
Ohright cheers the guy in the shop said thicker ones last longer, they were the same price so i bought one haha. See how it goes in the future but the advice was spot on!! Cheers!
Tomm
I still think a thin one would be better, but I doubt it makes much difference. As for taking the tyre off, just try harder. I think holding the tyre out of the way is really unsafe!

powerz
iv'e litraly just came in from re-doing my grind this time using a metal cutting disc (4mm thick 115mm diameter) which came out alot better than using a grinding disc.why not try a flat headed screwdriver to pop the tyre off, just make sure you dont stab the inertube lol, not to sure about holding the tyre out the way sounds very dangerous if the grinder catches the edge of your rim and kicks off the out come could be bloody.i take the whole wheel out, remove tyre ect then put your foot on the rim but out the way to stop it moving then just grind away
Walleee
I still think a thin one would be better, but I doubt it makes much difference. As for taking the tyre off, just try harder. I think holding the tyre out of the way is really unsafe! It's about as unsafe as using a grinder in the first place....When grinding the biggest danger is either the disc shattering or catching and 'kicking,' if you have the strength to stop this happening in most cases, you'll have more than enough to hold the trye out of the way. If you havn't the strength, you shouldn't be using the grinder.....Also, make sure you have a set of goggles, from my experiance there is a fair bit of metal flying round probobly because of the aluminium being relatively soft, I don't often hear it mentioned here but I never even plug the grinder in without having my goggles with me. Ben Beckett
bloody ell, use tyre levers to get tyre off. use bout 2-3, and lever the tyre off in very small spaces. takes a wee bit longer, but is effective.
Joe Sheehan!
whatver you do, use a mask. Not sure what rim you have, but some of the fumes from grinding are toxic. so do it outside.
Tomm
It's a tried and tested method Yeah, I've done it and it's well dodgy. For the sake of the 2 minutes it takes to get the tyre off (and put it back on), you'd be stupid not to. If you can't take the tyre off, then you shouldn't really own a trials bike. Have you never pinched?!
mods
It's a tried and tested method that doesn't mean it safe though does it, providing you use the grinder sensibly it not unsafe at all really.. common sense must provail here of course. Just take the tire off they are hard as we all know but just use some force

Have you never pinched?!I don't even take my wheel out the frame let alone the tyre off the wheel I do have enough strength to be able to wield a grinder in one hand though and only clipped my thumb when i first started. Its well easy to hold the tyre out the way, but just as easy to let your concentrations slip. If your going to do it... be very careful.I don't bother with goggles or a mask either. I used to use goggles and ear defenders, but then realised nothing ever went near my eyes and i should really still use the ear defenders... my ears ring after using it. Walleee
oh my god kris seriously never mind the defenders wear f**king goggles.Fair enough you might direct the metal away from you but what about if the disc breaks and flies into your face, god I can't believe what I just read you came across as someone who would be fairly safety conscious..... My discs are all new as well, never use old ones so the chance of them splitting are minute. I wear glasses too so i do have a form of eye protection

If you can't take a tyre off a bike, you need to give up and take on something a little less strenuous. If a tyre can go on, it can come off. Just grow some balls! Ash-Kennard
1. tomm is no knob2. if your all so afraid, your your foot to hold the tyre3. if you cant take your tyre off, start skateboarding, if it can go on it can come off.4. grow some muscles
-ANT-ONZA-
Well it’s all done now I ended up getting so annoyed at people taking the piss out of me that I didn’t respond until it was done. I used about 6 spoons and it’s sorted! I'm surprised by the response though I didn’t feel any community spirit! Anyway it’s done and dusted and I need never ask again! Cheers for the positive responses p.s I never called Tom a knob! Just felt his comment was slightly unnecessary!

Janson
when i can't be arsed to take the tyre off i push it to the side with my foot.i use goggles and ear plugs if i feel like it. my grinder is older than me and quite loud.the thinner the disk the better i find. i use a very thin disk now, it gives great grinds.scuffing the tyre a bit with the grinder is fine. ive done it to several tyres and they've all been OK. just as long as you don't keep pressing the grinder down when you hit the tyre.
