Stuck Bolts Any Edvice

Hey guys a few weeks back i had my mounts helicoiled everything was fine bolts were slightly stiff but was ok then today i was trying to remove one of the bolts for the 4-bolt mounts then it started to click and get really tight then it became impossable to unscrew and there was some sort of powder coming out of the inside of the bolt and then the bolt head rounded.

Have any of you guys got any suggestions on how to remove the bolt or has anybody had this problem before.

Thankyou.

sounds like you screwed the bolt into the frame, deeply too.

if its rounded, cut a slit in the top of the bolt, then use a screwdriver (Y)

Follow his advice its worked for me loads of times, sometimes giving the bolt a hit with a hammer shocks the threads and makes removing it alot easyer.

(please dont say this dont work if you havn't tried it peps cause iv'e done it and it does made removing my stuck bb alot easyer)

If it started to come out and then went all stiff sounds like you may have a bent bolt, if not you may have cross threaded it. Either cut the groove for a hacksaw and use screw driver or clue a allen key in with some strong clue or try jaming a torx key in it or last resort grind the head of the bolt of take your clamps off and then try using plyers to get it out.

Worst comes to worst, if you drill most the contents of the bolt out so there is not much left of the bolt, maybe 1mm of so including the thread, you may then be able to cause it to be brittle and shatter apart. No idea if this would work but it is something I have heard. Or do the above and put a reverse thread it in, then with a drill tighten it, as you tighten into the bolt it should undo from the frame or where ever you have the stuck bolt.

Sounds a lot like the bolt has corroded/cold welded itself to the helicoil (is the bolt stainless by any chance?) Could've done with some copper grease on it when you put it together, still, bit late for that :P

If it rounded the hexagon, its in bloody tight, so faffing about cutting slots in the head wont help matters cos you just wont get the torque needed onto it (easi-outs and other extractors are a similar story, especially in this small size they tend to break before a well stuck bolt will shift) . Can you get to the bolt head (i.e. is it above a booster?) or is it sunk down?

In the first case, get some mole grips on the bolt head, after soaking the thread as best you can in WD40 or similiar and giving it a few taps on the head with a light hammer.

If the head isnt visible, try knocking a torx key into the hexagon, there may be enough left for it to bite on. Failing that, drill the head off, disassemble everything and get the mole grips on the remains of the bolt.

If you have any other bolts left to get out, get them soaking in WD40 before you even think about taking an allen key to them, it'll save a lot of work.

All else fails, you can drill the bolt out, but if you dont immediately understand what I mean by that, you'll probably be best taking it to someone who does know.

Or bash in the closest next size up imperial, I found there is normally an allen key in that size range that is similar. Or maybe even a .5mm bigger allen key and use that. Failing that cut a deep groove in the bolt head and use anything long and thin that wont benid in the groove to un-do it.

Other than that drill it out and heli coil a new thread or use a bigger bolt

Cheers for all the help you guys its out now but i tryed a diffrent method its the best way i think.

Right get a table vice (a vice fixed to a table lol) clamp the bolt head in as tight as possable then use the frame as leaverage and spin the frame around which was very affective.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Cheers.

Sweet idea, could easily bend the bolt though if you dont keep the frame upright. Glad you got it out though.
