Rust Rust Rust!

Everyone gets it at some point, but I need to know what I can use to avoid getting rust on the bits where I've scratched my frame!

Would a varnish sort it ? as Rust always leads to cracks in my eyes!

Don't want to kick off, and the bike go into pieces :(

Helpppp :)

You live in portsmouth, near the coast, salt in the air+aluminium, with its top layer of Al2O3 removed by a scratch=corrosion. End of.

Not really anything to worry about though, due to a new layer forming on the scratched surface in a matter of seconds.

And yeah, ain't gunna rust if its aluminium. If I'm right in thinking that missions are 6061 aluminium then there's really nothing to worry about, 6061s pretty resistant to corrosion, hence it being used in marine applications.

Just get out and ride dude (Y) If you start to see some surface corrosion or rust anywhere on your bike, just give it a sand down and whack some paint on there.

rust is just a name for corrosion of Iron by oxygen.

and wheres the iron content in an alu frame then !

haha

people really do need to just ride there bikes and not give a dam..

go bash it, scratch it all over !!!!!

dent it, crack it, go for it !!!

Haha, exactly!

Hate to mention the countless scratches and the odd dent that 24" masterpiece you made me is covered in :$ . Meh, better that its ridden than just looked at!

And hendrixmaster, my frame IS steel, it is also covered in scratches, but I haven't been arsed to touch them up, and there not rusting. Same with my forks, gaping whole in the paint where they've been re-welded, and its still pretty shiny. Just the odd tiny pin willy sized bit of rust that I keep meaning to sand off. haha

Edit: moral of the story, if you scratch it, don't go running home in a hurry, rust takes time to form, its not just gunna pop up out of no-where!

(Even though your frames aluminium, so wont rust! forks may though, but like I said. Meh, who cares, ride it, don't pet it.)

Aran I know you are not that thick, I was making the point that Alu can corrode just like Iron or Steel, it's just given a different name in some compounds.

Guys, yes the Al2O3 forms VERY fast, but the impurities in it, where the Aluminium reacts with the salt in the air, will mean that the Al2O3 will eventually transform into whatever the salt is, I don;t want to have to bring REDOX into it, but if I have to I will.

Some brasso will fix that ;)

Seriously dude, its one teenie weenie layer of ally... stop worrying so much.... I rode my bare ally dirt jump frame in the sea a couple of years back... not just in the sea air... actually in the water. My frame never transformed into the salt, salt water, or even a giant robot. Its still not even been re-polished and is perfectly healthy.

I think you need to get out more and stop living in a "theoretical world" (Y)

Jeeze :ermm: ...

I'm not worried at all, I leave my frame alone, I don't mind if it has scratches, I'm just making the point that if you live near the sea you're likely to have ally's equivalent to rust, and that it is weaker than the usual aluminium oxide layer.
