Do you really think he needs, 40x optical zoom?, 80x digital zoom? HD screen? or a camera that looks like a nuclear bomb? A BIG ass battery. All these things are all so impractical for his use (assuming hes using it for filming trials and not making box office movies) and yet you think hes got £1000 to spend to on a camera Be real.JK
strat-trials
Best thing to look for is a mini-dv camcorder with a firewire or ilink out. These will connect to your computer via a firewire socket and give you decent quality. From my experience (media degree, filming bmx, assistant manager of jessops) solid state cameras aren't as good as mini-dv.I would avoid ebay like the plague for video cameras. A lot of the cameras on there are dodgy imports. For about 180 you could get a fairly good canon one or fairling that look at sony. Those two makes just have a better feel about them and work.Any q's just pm me CheersTom
Peaky
I have a Samsung VP-X220L. Firstly its tiny! about 1" thick, 3" long and 4.5" tall.It uses solid state memory so no discs or tapes to jump or damageIt has 2MB internal memory and you can just whack SD cards in it to expand the memoryIt has a ruberised casing so its shock proof and pretty good at repelling dirt and waterIt has a 10x optical zoomBest of all it comes with a helmet camera that plugs into the main cam-corder and has a remote that you can turn it on and off with so the main camera unit can sit in your pocket/bag out of harms way and the helmet cam is water proof and pretty rugged! It is quite expensive at £450 (this is what I paid for it on a British airways flight where I brought it from the duty free) but I think you would agree that it is awesome value for money! Here is a link so you can have a look Samsung video recorderFor some reason my camera is called a VP-X220L instaed of a SC-X300L as it says on the web site. I is the same camera though so I am thinking the model number might be different depending on which country you buy it!
PaRtZ
Get something with 3ccd if you can. It really helps with the clarity of your footage. Itll push the price up a bit, but for initial costs you can sacrifice battery mAh or something else to make up for it and then buy a better one later
Max Quinn
Nah sorry Partz but i dissagree. The cheapest 3CCD are the panny ones really at around £500?I just think he should start with 1CCD, if he just wants to document him an his mates progress like 80% of trials riders he won't need 3ccd. Only if he wants to seriously start making videos would i consider pushing to a 3ccd.
cmfx_2
I've seen plenty of Do It Yourself projects for helmet mounted bike lights. Wouldn't take much to convert one of these homemade devices into a camera (most pocket sized digi-cams have quite the movie capabilities on them). See if you can google bike lights and try making one yourself. It'll be cheaper and a fun little project
