Buying Abroad

Mornin all,

I've been looking about the net and have seen a few things i like, for example, this Adamant A3. Using what i think is the current exchange rate, it works out at about £240 which seems quite good.

Has anyone had any experience of buying abroad? What are import taxes like? Am I going to notice a saving? Are there any decent sites to look at?

(Y)

I can vouch that Hugo (HBtrials) is a very sound chap (Y) I've sold him Heatsink components which are on sale in his shop. Rather uniquely, you'll notice that all the prices don't include "taxes", so firstly he'll have to tell you the final retail price that applies to you.

You shouldn't pay any import tax at all. For example, if you live in Australia and order from CRC, it will be marked as a "gift", and sidesteps tax. This seems common practise, but again you should check that the sender will do this.

The big cost is going to be postage. This could be £40+, so a considerable cost.

Your best bet is to contact him and ask for the final price (taxes + postage) to bring the frame to you. I would very surpised if it's cheaper.

Surely if it's for export then you wouldn't need to pay the Canadian equivalent of VAT. You always used to be able to claim back the 7% of any purchases made in Canada when you leave the country. I know they are on about changing that, but I'm not sure when. Maybe it's not happened yet. Either way, it's a lot of hassle and you won't get a UK warranty etc.
