Satellite Internet

Recommended Posts

Howdy to all, im looking into getting satellite internet for my laptop so i can enjoy the benefits of being able to use it anywhere i go without the need for wires or modems etc.

What i want to know is what sort of laptop do i need to be able to cope with it, what hardware is needed for the connection and where i can get the satellite connection from and roughly what sort of price the connection is per month.

Any info as always is appreciated, Stu (Y)

What about a mobile phone + bluetooth. OK, it won't be as fast as broadband, but it can be used anywhere. You can get "unlimited"* usage from T-mobile for £7.50 on top of a normal pay monthly tariff.

*Unlimited = 3Gb

the 3G PCMCIA card jobbers should give you about 384kb/s - Vodafone and Orange used to be the best ones to go for but I don't konw what it's like now.

Apparently vodafone and orange aren't very competitive these days, there's no unlimited service and data rates are expensive. From what I've heard.

You are joking, right? That link for satellite Internet access is intended for small office, not mobile connections. Using a service like Inmarsat's RBGAN will cost you £400 + VAT for 68Mb of data if you go the prepaid route. And you'll need to carry a satellite dish with you the size of a small laptop - which costs upto £1400 + VAT if you go prepaid.

Go for Web 'n' Walk Pro with a 3G phone or PCMCIA card. Some that T-Mobile do offer HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access) going upto 1.1mbps if you're in a suitable area.

Seeing as im currently with vodafone their 3G option is looking really handy. And looking at the place im going to be staying for the next god knows how long it seems to be fully covered by 3G - Wohay!

Just wondering, do i need a 3G phone for this to work or just to be in a 3G area.....?

Seems if i just pay the £50 for a USB device and £45 a month for a connection everything will be shweet.

If your phone (and computer) has bluetooth then you can usually connect via that, I think bluetooth modules for PC are under a tenner now. Or maybe you can use the USB cable that came with the phone. I'm pretty sure you don't need a 3G (I.e. video) phone for this to work - my w810i has EDGE which is one type of fast internet, and that's not a stupid video phone or anything :)
