Is Is Stronger To Have Non Drilled Rims

Recommended Posts

well simple physics would say that yes it is.

but i personally dont know any one that has had troubles with drilled rims

and they do make your bike lighter

but really its up to you

i mean if yout not thrashing your bike around and landing everything really heavy and sketchy you probally shouldnt have any problems

An undrilled rim is stronger yes. However it is heavier.

Generally speaking, wider trials rims are extremely strong even when drilled as their width makes up for the strength lost from drilling.

Think of it as a compromise;

Wider rims: heavier but stronger

Drilled rims: lighter but weaker

Put them together and you have a good balance (Y)

That sums up your question completly.

the weakest part of any rim is the join this will usually break first compared with a hole.

so really a drilled rim is still as strong vertically. as in for landing on.

but horizontally they are weaker so need to be trued more often.

i would have thought that the only strength you really lose is the impact strength upwards, would buckle upwards or break easier than a standard rim, in theory. i dont think that side ways buckling would be as much of an issue. I know it isnt much of an arguement for practical use but all of the pros use drilled rims, that i know of.
