Driving

Ok little people and big people.

i am saving up for my driving lessons now finally decided to. I will have around 500 pound in 12 weeks I think maybe more depends. My rents said they will help me out getting money if I buck up my ideas and I have. I’ve gone back to college to do a carpentry (sp) course and i get 30 pound e.m.a and the course is 12 weeks so that’s 360 e.m.a if I stick at it.

I want to do a crash course test instead of normal as its better faster etc

Just wondering what do you do in it because its only like a week or 2 and how do you learn it all so fast etc

How much are they I know some are around 800 pound etc

if you could recommend one that would be great

Cheers

Beau

Dont get me wrong, the 'crash' course is a great idea. But from what I've heard/know, some mates did them. One of them failed 7 times after the week intensive and I've yet to hear of somebody (that I know) who has passed first time after the week intensive.

At the end of the day, it's all down to how confident you are. If you already know how to drive, then the week intensive will be spent teaching you road safety (blindspots etc.) which is a really good idea. But personally I don't think you can beat the traditional lesson approach.

'Crash courses' are great if you already know something.

Problem is you only become a better driver after TIME. You'll find at the end of a week, you might be able to pass your test but you cant 'Drive'

Exactly what I was going to say. I paid ended up only paying 400 pounds for my lessons. I didn't do a crash course and managed to pass in 20 hours including the test and did that over about 2 months (after having 2 months being taught by Dad and gaining the much needed road experience. however my friend paid 400 pounds for an intensive course and passed after about 2 weeks. I am so much of a better driver than him, just purely because I have had "road experience" which is vital to being a safe driver.

So beau, the intensive course is definately faster but at the same time definately not better for your driving. I am not trying to pursuade you against the intensive course because it is brilliant for people who want to pass very quickly, but my friend who did one, did spin out badly on a roundabout the other day :P

Yea i think road time is important, I've been on my scoot for 2 years and so didnt take me long at all to figure out a car, spent about 20 hours in the car with my dad, he didnt really say much just sat there and looked scared lol and ive had 5 lessons and the bloke says i can take my test :) got my theory today! wish me luck failed on all them practice ones! ooooops!

I think that unless you have a good reason to do the intensive course (like you NEED to pass before going away or something) then you shouldn't bother. I've not heard anyone pass from them and they're expensive.

they will also make you a shit driver!!!!

its not possible to learn everything in a week. end of.

you may well be taught everything you need to pass a driving test, but lets face it, any trained monkey could pass a driving test, its easy as pie, and shows NOTHING about your ability to DRIVE a car, it just shows you can operate pedals to a pretty average standard, and follow road signs.

put it this way.....

if a mate of mine had never driven a car before at all, went away for a week, did an intensive course, and came back with a car and a licence, i certainly wouldnt be going in a car with him at all.

if you want to do a crash course, you probably cant already drive at all, your probably desperate to get on the road, which means you probably want to drive like a tit. and im not saying we havnt all driven stupidly, but if you want to after a week behind the wheel, forget it.

In what way could it possibly be better? You'll have far less experience of driving when you take the test, and ultimately be less safe on the road after passing (if you pass). No doubt you'll then write off 3 cars in your first year like so many people I know.

I'm going to do an intensive course, but i've been able to drive a car to reasonable standard since i was 14 (obviously not on the road) so i have got some experience. Just out of interest whats pass plus all about? i know it lowers your insurance cost slightly but does it really make you a better driver, some places are offereing to put you through it in half a day.

I'm pretty sure that statistically the pass rate for intensive courses is higher than the traditional method. But I also agree that you're not gunna come out of it a remotely good driver.

I want to get my test during this summer really, because otherwise I'm gunna end up either buying a bus pass for college next year and only use it for a few weeks/months till I pass, which is several hundred quid, or I'm gunna be paying 6 or 7 quid a day to get into college on the bus, instead of about 2/3 quid petrol.

But I'm not gunna try and do a crash course, because I don't want to crash, my mum has whiplash caused by some twat ragging it through a blind corner, and I sure as hell don't want the same or worse. I'm basically planing/hoping to do what Simpson was saying about, drive the rents cars around all the time to get loads of road experience, and then take as few lessons as possible after that, just to drop any bad habits and touch up on the theory of it all. I'll probably take my theory test as soon as my provisional comes through, as I know I can pass it anyway.

But running a car costs more than petrol. You've got servicing, tax, tyres, insurance, cost of car, etc. That's why the standard rate employers pay when you use your own car for a work job is 40p a mile, even though for a standard mid-sized petrol or diesel the cost of the actual petrol is about 10p a mile.

Right now I get the train to work, even though it's a couple of quid a week more, firstly because it's less wear on the car, secondly because I hate rush-hour traffic (possibly not a problem for you with college hours though) and thirdly because it's generally less hassle.

Did a crash course myself. Had about 15 hours experience driving around with my Dad, then did 10 x 1 hour lessons in a week with my instructor and a test at the end (was about £250 I think, but he ripped me off 'cos I *think* they were meant to be 2 hour lessons). Passed first time.

Crashed a week later causing a few grands worth of damage (2 written off cars) a ripping from literally everyone at school and a very guilty conscience.

Don't bother. Get proper road experience, you can't rush it.

Whatever gets you through the test is best... you wont learn anything about the roads as a learner, things dont work that way..

You'll only learn how everything really works when your out in the big wide world on your larry. Dont care what anyone says.. its the truth.

You start learning to drive once you've passed your test.

True, although I don't think rushing it gives you any benefit.

All the drivers I know who passed after 3/4/5 tests were better drivers than I was after 1. There certainly seems to be a ratio between amount of lessons taken to the number of crashes in the first 3 months of driving amongst the people I know.

(edit, although agreed you only *properly* learn how to drive once you've passed, taking lessons and not rushing it certainly isn't going to hinder your ability to drive well once you have passed).

Yeah, I know running the car will cost more, but I'm going to get a car for other reasons, whether I use it to get to college or not. My point was just that if I get my lisence a few months into my course, rather than before it starts, then I'm gunna have payed for a years bus pass I'd only have used a for a few months, or I'd have payed to use the bus every day. So I'd rather get driving before the new year starts.

I know what you mean though, and I would keep using the bus if I wasn't going to get a car anyway. (trains out of the question, as the nearest train station is in the same town as my college, haha)
