I Have Noticed That My Freewheel Is Very Tempermental

i was out on a ride ages ago when my freewheel started skipping and i was thinking oh great a new one is needed

so i look around decide i want a new tensile one but having no money have had to put it on hold.

so i started riding my bmx more often and pretty much stoped riding trials.

but today i though u know what il get the onza out for a bit, get rid of the cob-webs sort of thing.

and i was waiting for it to skip every time i was about to do a drop.but to my supprise it didnt skip once on an hour ride tonight.

so its got me puzzled.

it might just be in a good mood because i gave it a wash and a little bit of a service

but hey i dont really know.

all i know is i can go riding for a bit again. well until it skips on me next then il probally give it a rest for a while again.

so im in a good mood :D

does any on else notice there bikes are tempermental at times?

cheers :D

haha i've had this with alot of things;

- Freewheel: sometimes it just keeps skipping, like once every 5min, then i go for a ride the other day and its absolutely perfect

- Fork: sometimes they are loose like f*ck (like today) which is very annoying, while they are quite stiff the other day

- Stem: just keeps making annoying clicking sounds for a few days, then stops for a day, and goes on after that day for a while again

I never buy new parts so it's not weird that they're doing this :P

yeah i have noticed my bikes do that sort of thing a lot

like my bottom bracket on my haro will creak one day when im having a more melow ride

then il go out the next day and hit everything as hard and fast as i can and theres no noise at all.

when you say you hit everything hard and fast as you can you might just be so into what your doing your not really paying attention to wierd noises :P

Mine didn't make wierd noises either. Its just went. You can get a cheap freewheel for a 10er so don't give up trials just because you cant afford a tensile (Y)

:P Rorz.

ha ha god never planned to give up

i have just gone through a lot of cheap freewheels though

so thought might as well shell out the money for a decent one next time

but if i cant get it by the dj ride on the 13th of may then il just buy another cheap one and whack that on their.

what do you mean by skip sometimes its a stiky chain

hmmm

do u ride trials?

im pretty sure every one that has ever ridden trials has experianced a freewheel skipping at the occasional time.

its where it doesnt connect with one of the points of engagement inside and there you go to for example kick hop

and you give it a kick and the cranks go round but the freewheel doesnt engage therefore causing you to go nowhere.

this in mycase always ends up in me having to jump of because it throws you off balance normally.

or at least it does for me

Is the lockring tight?

If not, tighten it, then it wont skip as much. (Y)

I find that parts creak more in cold weather. All i know it my profile has never skipped. :D

i have never seen a profile freewheel before.

and yeah the lockring is nice and tight

im going with its where it is a cheap freewheel.

and that if i am nice to it

it will be nice to me

is my theory towards it at the moment

i thought i told you the other day im not going to be able to come due to being at work till about 3?

haha

i think the easiest solution will be a new freewheel.

but until i have my motorbike sorted to pass its mot im gunna be strapped for cash.

Sometimes my freewheel comes loose, so I just tighten it up again and it is fine. The other day it completely fell apart, mainly because I tightened my chain too much and it must have worked the freewheel loose, all the inside bits of the freewheel came out and got lost in the process, so I have to get a new freewheel now.

ha ha rely on me then lol. anyways, on subject, have you checked your chain? my freewheel started skipping because one of the links was missing on my chain.

lockring, get a screwdriver and a hammer and tighten the barsterd thing up

does your freewheel click? my mates stopped clicking and then it died

all little things to check really
