Disk Breaks, Mechanical Vs Hydraulic

hi

i would say hydro because the break on a cable feels strange and you need a really expencive or good leaver to make it feel ok however on a hydro the brake feels ok without expencive leavers and plus you can get more variation with a hydro

just a preferance :P

I think a £13 avid lever is cheaper than a £50+ disk lever.

I prefer mechanical disks:

*more adjustable

*nicer lever shape

*nicer easier lever pull

*can be slighty adjusted to fit different sized rotors

*can pull the lever without the wheel in and not have to push the pads back in again

*can get cable spairs in any bike shop

*doesnt leak

*cheaper

*bloody powerful

*easier to setup

Ali C has basically summed it all up really, i love my avid bb7, just upgraded the lever top an sd7 and now its even better! they are easy to maintain, good power and feel at the lever

but referring to your question and most of the answers, your question should have been, avid bb7 or hydraulic?

Ive been running hope mono trials on the front and rear and ive had no trouble with them for about 6 months, apart from the fact that the lever blades come out way to far when the brakes are adjusted, which is not a problem with the cable disks. It is also a lot more expensive to both buy and maintain hydro brakes.

I hate those stupid shims on hopes. they're too fiddly and irritating so thats why I hate them. BB7's are possibly the best brake I've ever had...Im using two now ;) and to be honest I don't see what a hydraulic brake has over a mechanical one? just more problems

My personal opinion is that mechanicals are better, i think that they are better mostly because they are relatively easy to set up and are alot easier to get parts for. I have had a few hydraulic brakes and have to say they are really nice but their alot more trouble when they go wrong! I could go on but alot of what i wont to say has already been said. I would definatly suggest anyone thinking of a hydraulic brake take a good look into the avid bb7 its a very good brake and with the right adjustments could easily be better than any hydraulic.

thanks lewis

sorry to spoil your fun with this topic, but i must say there have been about 3 of these topics in the past week or so, so can you please just search the forum before you make a new one, its a waste of space. when i say 3 topics in the last week or so i mean on NMC, so just look down the page or even the second page and i garantee there will be a complete replica of this post

also it depends on what you fell is best, neither one is better, its just hydrolics are used by more people
