Problem With Pedal Threads

got a set of echo forged cranks :) sadly the pedal threads are busted on them... they just went when out riding. both in the space of a couple of days. would it be possible to drill them out and put the tensile pedal thingy in there?

this thing

i am a fairly harsh rider.. so will this affect the strength much?

thanks

It should be fine to do that aslong as you can find the right taps as no doubt the thread will be a strange one. I shouldn't think the strenght will be affected all that much, I should only think it will be ever so slightly weaker around the thread as your removeing some material. But your not applying no heat or anything to the ally then you should be ok.

standard pedal thread size is 9/16 x 20tpi i think.

Remember though, opposite threads for pedals (asin the are left hand as to not undo the insert/ axle)

But he doesn't need that thread size as hes talking about using tensile inserts so he needs the thread size of outer thread on the insert. Not the pedal thread.

If no one on here noes it ring onza/supercycles they will no or tarty might

i know, im just saying thats the size for axles so he knows where abouts to go off.

my zoo cnc cranks did that after about a month, I just assumed they were useless and went back to rs7's.

Does someone want to give me a brief summary of what a helicoil is? and how i'd go about using one (seen some pics but unsure)

from what i make of it, its tapping a slightly bigger hole in whatever and then inserting a springy thing in to restore the thread and bring the hole back to the normal size.

probably wrong thou :P

thread size of tensile inserts anyone??

I went to some engineering places today and they said they could do the drive side (as its normal thread) but not the other side as theyre left hand, Anyone know anywhere who can actually helicoil (or similar) both sides? :(

nah i've called various places. all the bike shops in town and a couple of engineering places only found one place, precision engineers. but they didn't have the right tap or couldn't do the non drive side either. the closes tap he had was 9/16th's *18tpi and the pedals have an oversized thread of 9/16th's *20tpi!!

tarty gave me the diameter and the pitch of the thread of the tensile inserts which are 18.75 Diameter 1.2pitch. i'm considing trying to fit these.

hopefully the engineer will have the right tap for those.
