David
Hey there, hopefully starting uni in september and me and my Gf are considering renting a flat together. I'm guessing quite a few people on here have or are renting a flat...I'm after as much information as possible, any useful hints or tips? My one query is electricity and gas. Many sites ive been on dont mention anything about it. Does that mean you have to pay seperately and its not included in the price? Thanks for any help,Dave
Wrayvon
Not wanting to discourage you or anything, but renting at the end of the day, is just wasted money. You don't get anything back like you would after paying a mortage etc. But you are only 18 so I would say renting for a while will do you good. I assume you live with your parents at the moment? Moving out with give you a better idea of what to expect in the future.Personally, I wouldn't rent for a long time if possible for the above reason.I just realised that hasnt really helped at all, so yeah, sorry
SomeoneNew
Right if its your first year of uni and you have the choice halls is the way forward!! best place to meet people and more than likely the cheapest!! I'm in my second year now and already organised my house for next year, Generally unless its stated you have to sort out you own gas electricity and water bills etc! all adds to the cost and can get a bit pricey (when you inclusde rent)! I can't think of anything else at the moment but i'll add more if i can think of stuff
tomturd
Right if its your first year of uni and you have the choice halls is the way forward!!Ditto.Bill won't be included unless its stated that they are. Worth finding out. Make sure you note down the meter readings when you first move in, can save a lot of hassle later on.
poopipe
definitely halls for the first year. you get to know a lot more people that way even if they do rape you for rent.getting a mortgage may be better in the long run but nobody's going to lend you the money until you have a job so that's a non starter
JonMack
Go halls first year.Meet cool people.Rent a student house for the next 2(+) years. You & your girlfriend could split up, potentially jeopardising your uni course due to lack of funds available to pay rent/bills/etc.Doesnt matter how long you've been together, it can always happen.Prince William is a perfect example!!
