Adjustment Cones On The King Hub

hey

i got a couple of second hand King hubs about 1 month ago and they have been fine, apart from last week they skipped a couple of times just a tiny amount. so i had a look on the Chris King site, watched some Videos and tired to undo the 5mm bolts and then maybe adjust the cones if needed to see if this would put an end to the skip.

i've got as far as taking the back wheel out of the bike and now tired to undo the alley keys and they won't come loose, the bolts keep twisted and theres not much fiction but their not coming undone :(

just wondered if anyone had some ideas??

its a Rear king hub Btw

When you say they twisted, you are aware you have to an Allen key in each end and push on one and pull on the other, it'll be REALLY tight, so don't be afraid of giving it a fair bit of pasty. Then you can tighten up the cone (the thing with the grooves in it on the non drive side) and tighten the hub back up.

yeah man i got 2 5mm alley keys in either end and given it a fair whack but now there turning freely and still not undoing

Also i haven't taken the lock ring off the cassette do i need to?

Sounds like the axle is snapped unfortunately :(

Which parts are spinning and which parts are staying still?

well the 2 alley key bolts (5mm) ones are both spinning as i try to undo them :S but they not coming undone. so basical at the first step in ur vid :P

if it was a snapped axel wouldn't i have noticed riding??? :S

On the normal axles, it is known for the driveside alloy insert to break and come loose within the steel section of the axle. The best way I found to get round it was put the adjusting tool on the cone, hold it still with grips or a spanner and undo the left side allen socket.

Yep, as Edd says, that's what seems to be the problem and that's the solution... problem is, most people don't have a cone adjusting tool :(

your right, so looks like your gonna have to sort it for us :P umm does Tarty service Chris kings?? because i'd like to get it sorted properly plus i don't have the fancy Chris King tool either, not sure what lubes used and/or any other damaged bits with in:S

Would it be stupid to keep riding it? or will it damaged other bits?

cheers harry
