More Car Problems

Recommended Posts

Right well as some of you know i have a peugeot 406 sri turbo. A while back i started getting huge amounts of blue smoke coming out of my exhaust on idle. Now it wasnt miss firing, making any strange noises or anything but i decided to get it checked out. In the car went to the garage, they did some other repairs and service stuff i asked them to do but the main reason for the car going into the garage was to get this blue smoke issue sorted.

I had the head pretty much re-conditioned, new valve seals, tappets, springs, valves and seats ground, shimmed head skimmed new gasket and seal set and head bolts. They also took the pistons out and cleaned them all up put new main dealer rings on and re-homed the bores. It was an expensive job to get done but at the end of the day i do love my car and if i could spend 2 grand on getting everything sorted and the car lasts me perhaps 3 - 4 years i'd see that as a perfectly good investment. The final bill come to £1880.20

Upon getting my car i was told naturally to take it easy etc cos of the new rings so i have been but im now nearly 2 grand down and had to wait for 2 days under 6 weeks for all this work to be done and guess what, i've still got blue smoke coming from the exhaust - infact i swear its worse than before it went into the garage.

So im wondering where do i stand with all this....? As a customer i've paid for a job to be done and a problem to be fixed which hasnt. Granted they did the work but they still havent actually fixed the problem. As far as im concerned its their job as a professional garage to be able to identify the exact cause of the problem and fix it accordingly. They do know about this smoke and im going to see them on tuesday with my car but i know they arent going to be willing to accept reponsibility over this. Im sure legally i must be entitled to something being done about this...? I mean afterall, its not like i have 2 grand to just waste.

Any advice over this situation would be as ever appreciated.

Stu (Y)

Well like many other people that have been in similar situations with garages, I'm sure when you go down there Tuesday and explain the situation something good will come of it. Just explain that you took it to them to rectify the problem, spent alot of money apparently getting it fixed and was without a car for almost 6 weeks. If they don't offer to take the car back in an fix the problem they were meant to solve then I'd be pretty livid. Just see how it goes Tuesday

Garages are not always the most reliable of places. I've been told plenty of bad examples by people, and my dad's been ripped off a bit too. At the end of the day, garages just do it purely because they can, so they can make more money, which is why a great deal of people resort to home-mechanics. Similar to us on our bikes as bikeshops sometimes crap up the bike in areas and take their time doing everything which ends up costing a fortune, and not done to suit your needs.

I can not be sure about this blue smoke issue, but perhaps it's worth investigating what its technical term is and research a bit online or in books. Then perhaps try and sort it yourself, or with any mechanic friends you may have.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Oil in turbo.

I'd get it sorted asap. Friend just had this then oil got into places it shouldn't of (can't remember where, plus it was a diesel) and its blown a valve, so now needs a whole new block as well as turbo.

turbo seals/bearings gone.

any decent garage would have been able to tell this without even opening the bonnet.

your best bet would have been to pay for the 1hr diagnosis at a peugeot dealer to find out the problem and if the quote is too much take it elsewhere.

As a general rule blue smoke is problems with turbo and white smoke is to do with water getting into engine and black smoke is burning oil.

yes you are fully entitled to take your car back and demand that they fix the problem you paid them to fix.

If they get shirty, tell them you will get trading standrds involved. and if they dont do it then, get trading standards involed.

As for the fault, that points towards turbo oil seal failure.

Having the engine rebuilt for that is a pointless exersice
