i always used to run a maggie on a smooth rim on the front, it was fine.

Me too.

Never felt a need for anything more. If it's well set-up with even original pads and the pads are hitting square, they can be quite powerful :)

Yep, and if not, get some Zoo pads or similar and you'll have no problems :)
