RomanC
I've been looking at various biketrails forums for about 6 years, Maybe the first forum ever? (created in 1999) http://lists.topica.com/lists/mtb-trials/readwww.biketrials.comand now OTNI am just curious as to the reason why the admins decided to have the pre-member "feature" on this forum as this is not the case on any bike/non-bike forum I have ever been on.Was this created to fight bots/ads and deter people from scamming others in the "for sale" section?Just curious how this came to be, since as far as I recall TK was open to everybody right awaya few years ago. JT!
It's to stop people comming on the forum and posting crap in the main section, the forsale wtd rule is to stop people just comming on the forum to sell things. It's probably the most used trials forum on the net, so these kinds of rules have to be in place.

Class Clown
If there wasn't rules on TF it would be scammers heaven in the "for sale" section It's a good idea with the pre-members idea and as i think JT said it is the most used trials forum EVER!!!Cheers Pimp
quick_spider
The first forum I remember was the yahoo! group modandstocktrials. Think that was around 1999/2000.The New-Members area was introduced mainly beacuse there were too many users who thought grammar was the old woman who lived with their grandfather, and that there are no vowels in the English alphabet.I think it's similar to OTN's kiddie korner, except that you start there, and have to graduate...Welcome Jon

-ANT-ONZA-
For the record i'm against the whole validation thing, it needs some kind of change.Really?!?! I don’t see why, at first when I couldn’t reply to items I wanted to buy in the for sale section I did but the more I think about it the more I feel actually anyone could come on and rip innocent people off. It also works yeah it may take a while but I'm still happy hahaBest regards, Anthony
Dai the Socket
For the record i'm against the whole validation thing, it needs some kind of change. It's all well and good saying that, but without a valid suggestion to how it should change, it's a pretty shit post
tomturd
It's all well and good saying that, but without a valid suggestion to how it should change, it's a pretty shit post Very true.People like the forum not being full of crap everywhere.. yet also don't like pre members area (I don't like the fact it has to be done either), but it has to be one or the other.Alternative suggestions, as always, are welcome. Ash-Kennard
i think a set up like observedtrials.net should exist, but have aload more moderators and an area for retards, maybe introduce a way of banning more than one account by restricting the ip address to 1 account or something. hell, ill help moderate im on here enough. if not then the seniors could do something useful... Was quite some time ago though...

JT!
Really?!?! I don’t see why, at first when I couldn’t reply to items I wanted to buy in the for sale section I did but the more I think about it the more I feel actually anyone could come on and rip innocent people off. It also works yeah it may take a while but I'm still happy hahaBest regards, AnthonyThere's loads of people who go unnoticed in new members, more than people think i recon. And there are also people who don't ever bother with the forum becuase they never got validated. It's like, trying to stop all the illigal imigrants comming into this country buy not letting anyone in at all. It's all well and good saying that, but without a valid suggestion to how it should change, it's a pretty shit post I said what i said becuase the guy up there said...It's a good idea with the pre-members idea and as i think JT said...just to corret him.I dunno what can be done about it really, i dunno enough about the whole forum thing (admin side of it anyway) works. There's no perfect solution really. The main problem is there's isn't enough people who can validate people.Having no new members section, but have a 'noob question' section instead, then have no validation, everyone's a member stright off and they can get de-validated if they arse about. But people could just make a new account, and like i said befor i don't know weather that problem could be solved or not because i don't know how all the IP stuff works. As far as i know, all the mods and admin do is look at the bottom of the page and pick out the people in orange, mainly. So the people who come on, say, once or twice every month will never get validated. Some kind of system that alerts mods and admin at a fixed time since the person signed up so that everyone got a fiar chance would also solve alot of problems.A 'validate' button with the repport button, so anyone can suggest someone to be validated?I never really got the whole banning of the forsale/wanted in new members either, i've only ever been ripped off once, and that was from a validated member who i've quoted in this post. It dosn't really help people who come on this forum to pick up a starter bike 2nd hand, and they can't, becuase it's against the rules. Now that i'm on the subject, why were 'wanted' threads banned, i can maybe understand the forsale threads, but if a new member wants to buy off someone, there's no chance of a member getting ripped off, becuase they sent the payment first. Allow wtd threads in new members?
quick_spider
FYI There's a validation station (Thanks to Dave Dennis) It allows the mods and admin to view a list of new members who joined within the past x days and has been active in the past y days. In general I look at members who've joined within the past 90 days and have been active in the previous 7. I tend not to look at members who've got less than 10 posts. There are a few members who use the report button to suggest candidates for validation and it's welcome as they very often good suggestions.Jon

rider_01
The whole idea about validation is good, i think it lets you get used to the forum and learn tips tricks and things you didnt know befor you post in the main area although there is the down side, people being validated at different times seems to be a big problem, were as i talk to someone regularly and he has only been signed up for 5 mounths (if even that ) and he is validated already when i have more post ect.... and still a pre member, but i think it would be a good idea for pre members to be validated all at the same time say 6 mounth, seem fair, and then be closely watched for the next couple of weeks just to see what they are posting ect ....if i have spoke out or turn in anyway towards admins or members i am sorry and one quick question, how do you become a admin are you selcted by someone ?sean Edited April 7, 2007 by rider_01

JT!
and one quick question, how do you become a admin are you selcted by someone ?Admin are the 2 people who created the site. The moderators are chosen by the admin, usually former senior members (SM's), SM's are picked by the admin too.Admin, moderators and SM's get together and have wild sexy partys on the first Sunday of every month. Fixed Pants™
FpeepsIYou can ban ips, aswell as email domains and keywords in peoples usernames, and a few other things. I'm admin on a failed forum so i'm pretty clued up.I agree with the wtd allowingage for NMC, there's no real way the seller can be ripped off as long as they get payment first.
