Are Spd's Cheating?

In my experiance MOST of trials riders just wear normal shoes (weather its skate shoes or trainers , whatever even trials shoes are ok)

But i saw on a video the otherday a guy wearing SPD's

For those that dont know what they are . They are special pedals witch hook up to specialist shoes, these are most commonley used in road racing and even XC but i was thinking about it and surely using them in trials makes it REALY easy to do stuff,

like taping your shoes to a skateboard.

what do you think?

know anyone that rides with SPD's?

Cheers Leo

There was a US rider probably 6 years that used power straps. straps that go on top the of pedals and you put your feet inside. Needless to say he switched to platforms after a while. As others have said bailing would be problematic.

I have a specialized rock hopper(a xc bike) that i use for getting the fitness in with SPD pedals and shoes.

I can track stand for fun on my trials bike, but when you are locked in it is a completely different story.

My dad runs them on his santa cruz blur 4x and hes had many incidents when hes out on an xc ride. Like going flat out through forest and coming accross a closed gate... And as you can imagine, them pedals wont unclip when you want them to.

i'd like to know how taping your feet to a skateboard makes skating easier  What the hell tricks can you do? You couldn't even ollie. Theres a reason why they're only seen on road bikes.

You wouldn't even be able to move, unless you were on a hill.

It's kinda cheating. In the same vein that it's kinda suicidal aswell.

haha, as much as I have laughed this topic in the face I'm actually glad someone posted it. I hope "Mod Man Leo" wasn't being serious, if you were mate... laugh along

If you think it's cheating then you really should try doing tricks with SPDs on - it's really hard!

I have them on my XC bike and I find bunnyhops harder; maybe it's the foot position, who knows, the movement just isn't the same.

So I guess if by cheating you mean 'be-worse-and-kill-yourself' then yes ... yes SPDs are definitely 'cheating' haha :)

What if you need to bail haha

Could put a different edge Entertainment factor on trials riding

but would hurt more when you fall off.

i mean imagine trying to bail at the top of 7 palets but you were attached to youre bike. AWCH

My Dad has some on His Rocky Mtn XC bike

, and he is getting used to them very nicely now, but it was a difernt story a month ago.

I mean He can unclip them very easily now but not fast enough.........

When he first got them, he was very chuffed with them, but that changed very quickley, he got me and my brother out the house "SAM, LEO COME AND CHECK THESE THINGS OUT , THERE GENIUS ,!!!"

Walked outside and saw him cycling down the street with a huge smile on his face then he stopped and ballanced for a little while , then it struck him, (the floor that is) he slowly started to tilt over BAM the biggest dead leg i have EVER seen.

I videod it on my old phone, may have to dig it out.!

I can't see the advantage of SPDs that you are seeing. They help with xc and dh for faster and easier pedal strokes. Once you ride a bike for long enough your feet stay attached to the pedals anyway. I suppose they could help with riding along rails as you wouldn't end up useing a leg to balance. So a balance increase may happen over time but thats just silly. They would also disadvantage you in the long run. So as you've probably guessed there isn't much point to them in trials.

Yep, the only annoying bit with them is the lack of spontaneity... like if you must plan your crashes in order to unclick your feet... Would never use them on anything else than a road or XC bike. But I must say, for having tried, the pull on bunny hops is just amazing  , though different
