Rightio...after selling pretty much evrything i own..ive scrapped together about about £600.

And im in need of a laptop.

Uses for this laptop will be mainly photo editing.Lots of ps work .email . net. You get the jist.

I want something quick..i dont wanna be hanging about on street corners waiting for ps to load for me to get pictures sent out.

Ive been looking at all sorts of laptops..ranging from the £400 pc world jobbies...upto £800 Macs.

Must be fairlyish..ish small, dont really want anything above 15". Also battery life must be 3+ hours..

Am i asking alot..i dont know.

Vista would be nice..and ideal..fed up of xp lol..and everything is coming with vista now anyways.

Built in webcam and all that shiz isnt nessicary..but nice if it has it.

So yer..what we thinking?? ( oh and im gonna get people saying, get a mac, for photo editing..and all that malarky..but i dont know if i can justify the extra money u have to pay..for the same specs of a cheaper laptop) hmmm..

Help needed. Thanks in advance.

Joe

It may not be the route you want to go by, but I thought my experience might be useful...

I bought a second hand 800mhz g3 ibook 4 years ago, it was 3 months old and I got it for £600ish off ebay. Even then it was expensive for a second hand computer which was slow compared to the pc equivelent. However I still have that laptop and it is still my main computer. All the software on it is downloaded, I download music movies and all sorts of utility programs that bugger around with the settings but I have never had any problems with viruses and I have never needed to wipe my harddrive or lost any work off it. It was part of a run from the factory that had a fault with the logic board, this has admittedly broken on 3 occasions rendering the computer useless, however apple have replaced the logic board and returned it to me with no loss of data and no charge each time, despite it being a second hand purchase. For the good customers service, the great stability and lack of viruses, not too mention the sexyness of the look of them, I would consider a mac. But they're expensive mother f**kers.

If you've got a PC at home, Joe, you might want to get a PC laptop. You could get a fairly good spec laptop that would do what you want with XP for that much. If you go for Vista surely you'll need a slightly better spec and hence have to buy 'the latest model', so to speak.

BTW, if you're taking it out an about with you, make sure it's insured!!

i got this one and it's excellent - not tiny but less than 3 kg and a decent screen resolution(1280x800) and it's really quick

if you don't want to play many new games this is basically the same without the graphics card

they do AMD based versions of these for less money but I'd opt for the intel to be honest - more L2 cache, less heat, less noise etc.

you might have ust missed out on the free vista upgrades with these but you do get xp media centre which seems fine to me so far

I wouldn't touch vista for a year on a machine i actually wanted to use for something constructive

I dont understand why having a PC at home would mean you wanted a PC laptop, I'd vote Mac, you will get most of the benefits that Vista would give you, pretty good virus immunity it will talk to your XP machine and do easy file transfers (which Vista will give you issues with I'm told).

Oh, and yes get it insured if you are taking it out and about, we had 4 laptops stolen at work this week :(

you get a much better machine for your money if you buy a PC - particularly in the sub £1000 range, I considered a Mac but they're too damned expensive for what you get - even if you don't consider the lack of available apps.

i thought amd processers were alot more quiet and cooler.... or is that just desktop processors?

not quite the same - although i nearly did get one of them (its better than the cheaper one I linked)

the one I got has a proper graphics card - that one has one of the new intels which I wouldn't trust for serious 3D work - mine also has faster memory bus but i think the clock speed on the vaio would make the difference unnoticeable

however - that's a fine machine and if you're not interested in Max / Maya / shiny new games it'll do you absolutely fine

  • 2 weeks later...

Looks like a fairly nice spec, will load applications pretty quickly unless the hard drive is balls. Graphics card is rubbish though to let you know. With your job I imagine graphics cards are a must? If not, it looks like that could be your one!

its a good spec thats for sure, not the best graphics card, but then it is onl 650 quid, its deof enough to do what you want to(Y) the screens are quite nice. the only real gripe i had with mine was that the plasitcs werent of the highest quality but meh. plus you can get the acer aftercare for for a total or 3 (inclusive of your first 12months warranty) years which includes accidental damage and unlimited worldwide repairs at any point within the first year for only like a 100 notes. tis well worth it, i dropped mine and it landed on the power port whiulst it was plugged in, which broke the power converter off the mobo, 2 weeks later it was back to me witha new mobo, and they replaced the whole chassis which had a few cracks from where i'd dropped it; all for free :)
