ilikeriding
Its different for everybody, the lesser bounces seem to give more momentum but do what you feel comfortable with.

Oh shit I'm up!Need to work these out myself again at the minute, but as has been said, a lot of it is just the commitment.Use the search and you should be able to track down a fair few topics on it, with a decent amount of useful content out there on the rest of the net too
Gandalf the Yellow
many people sidehop from the back wheel because 1/4 of your bike is 'already' up.front wheel just needs extra lifting and back wheel needs to tuck up to follow the front.as other have mentioned really...do it the way you feel most comfortable.good luck!steve
RomanC
If you sidehop to your bad foot side, then if you slip in most of the cases you will fall down on your crank/pedal and there will be no damage to the frame. Also practicing on wood helps a lot, as it won't bash the bike compared to concrete. harmertrials
I've just started to sidehop. I can get 3 and a half pallets at the moment but I seem to be getting better every day. I can nearly tap aswell and I can now gap to front.

2sixstreet
My progression was a bit like this in the last couple of months. I could never get my head around side hopping from the rear wheel as a first attempt.- find a low wall/bench etc and slowly roll parallel to it. Grab the front brake, do a small endo. Use the momentum of you coming down to onto back wheel and follow through by lifting the front and then the back wheel whilst going to the side. I found I could concentrate on moving sideways more since the lifting part was pretty much taken care of. You will probably jump backwards as well but this will sort itself with practice.- Next was 2 wheels static side hop. Its easier to balance on 2 wheels if you turn the front wheel into the object you are trying to side hop. Commitment is key and if you bail you will easily be able to dab and save it on small stuff. Just have another go and get a feel for whats happening. This time your balance is taken care of whilst again concentrating on height and direction.- Progression to one wheel side hop was a bit harder but you already have the basics of direction and height. You now need to add balance and control. The way I did it was by accident. I was on the back wheel, parallel to a ledge with a howling cross wind. When I hopped it was wind assisted and landed it. Something clicked and managed to repeat it with no wind. Just need to work on control and increase height etc but well chuffed with progress.Hope that helps getting to one wheel.
