Glandular Fever...

What are people's experiences with it? And how did it affect you in terms of symptoms, and how long did it take to go? I can't get an appointment at my local GP for about 3 weeks so I'm trying to find out what's killing me now. I wake up and can barely speak, but it doesn't hurt or anything. Have a bit of a chesty cough, but I just feel tired all the time, like I have no energy and just feel like I need to lie down a lot. Apparently that kinda matches the symptoms for glandular fever, so I thought I'd check here...

Sounds about right, but do you feel sick at all, and obviously are your glands really swollen?

Edit: In some cases it can last up to 18 months. My sister has had it since last november, although she says she feels fine, some days after she's been out and shit she comes back feeling really run down and ill.

My friend has it at school and hes had it for about 4 months and counting now. He said it will just drain all his energy and wont be able to do anything but his love for football won't stop him playing the sport and makes it worse, he needs to rest but won't so he hasnt been able to recover yet.

It's not the glandular fever that kills you, I don't think.

It makes you more likely to catch loads of life threatening shit. Wikipedia it, it come's up with loads of stuff about it.

No girlfriend, but I'll have to leave off Mat when I head home in a week or two ;)

My glands don't hurt at all, but they are a little swollen? I don't feel sick at all either. I just feel normal, but in the mornings my throat goes weird, and from time to time I just have no energy at all. So yeah, it's kinda weird. I knew glandular fever was a long term sorta illness, even though on the BBC site it says it goes away in 1-2 weeks, and don't do sports for a month. I'm still going out riding but now when I feel tired I just head off home instead of pushing through it. Just have to see what the doctor says in April I guess...

Cheers for all the comments, even though they all seem to suggest the next half a year of my life is going to be wank :P

I had it last year, was off college for a month but it didn't really go away for a few months after that.

The only thing I could eat was spaghetti, yogurt or ice cream as nothing else would actually fit down my throat.

I would get a maximum of 2 hours sleep per night, I fell asleep and then woke up every 15-25 minutes, all night.

I would get completely knackered walking up the stairs.

I started to hallucinate near the end due to lack of sleep, that was interesting.

You won't be able to breath with your nose at all, not one bit. You know when you think you can't breathe through your nose, but you sorta can? Nothing like that, nose completely 100% blocked off, if someone covered your mouth you would suffocate.

Swallowing was beyond hard to the point where you have to take a few minutes to psyche yourself up for it.

So yeah, enjoy yourself:P

You should be able to get an emergency appointment for the GP, 3 weeks is taking the piss. Or go to a walk-in centre. Failing that you could always just go to A&E if it's really bad.

Sounds just like you've got flu or some chest infection really? But yeah, go and see a doc (Y)

My mum phoned NHS direct and got a doctor out within about 2 hours (at 10pm) when I had it about 3 months ago. I was f**ked, couldn't move at all. Was sick when I took tablets to make the throat better too, like bloody sick. Urgh!

I had no energy, and i'd happily stay in bed for 24-36 hours with out doing anything. I was also sweating buckets, felt freezing but was actually really warm with a temperature of about 102degrees I think (cant remember to be precise but it was mega high).

The doc said the best thing to do was to take my covers away, and let me freeze to bring my temperature down. Keep drinking water and paracetamol. Don't try to eat anything if you don't want to.

I'd get ringing NHS direct if I were you: 0845 4647 and make your mum INSIST you have a doctor come out, 'cos moving you could make you freeze or collapse (Y)

My Mum lives about four and a half hours away by car, so it'd be a call to her, then a call to them :P I've had it for 2-3 weeks already, so I guess 2-3 weeks 'til I can get home and see my GP (Not registered with one in London) probably won't be too bad. Having said that, I'm gonna die now or something, but we'll see how it goes.

Tomm - one of my doctor friends said what I had first was a throat infection and could spread to other areas easily, so I guess it's just going to be a chest infection that's giving me the good news. Are chest infections the usual antibiotics 'n' rest thing?

You can get a doctor's appointment as a 'Temporary resident' - They just treat you and send the bill to your proper GP, it's dead easy. But yeah, from what you've said it doesn't sound desperately urgent.

You can get a sore throat/cold type thing that's just a virus or something and all the snot drips down into your lungs. So you bring up nasty green phlegm but it's not actually from your lungs if you get me, so it's not a chest infection as such and you don't need antibiotics (most sore throats/colds are viral so antibiotics won't touch them, whereas actual chest infections are usually bacterial).

I had Glandular fever about 1.5 years ago now, worst i've ever felt illness wise. I didn't leave my room for like 3 weeks, my throat was so swollen and white i could hardly breathe, liquids only jobby, if i walked around the house i would sweat like a pig and i had no energy to do anything. My throat isn't so swollen now, but it never wen't down properly so it is allways swollen. I still feel like i have no energy to do things, i have had a blood test and it is still in me, it can't be passed on now though.

From what i have read/been told you can suffer from the symptons for many years. This probably isn't what you wan't to read, but its the truth you'll find out sooner or later.

Hope you get well soon, it might not even be Glandular Fever? Get a blood test if you haven't allready... :flowers:
