lawrence osborn
Hey guys,I'm a little confused right now on steerer tube cutting, i asked my local bike shop how much it would cost for him to cut my steerer tube and he said £20 so i thought i'd rather do it myself. So i figured out from other posts i searched for that you put the stem on draw a line round that and then cut it with a hacksaw? i thought thats easy then i thought how do i know were to bang the star nut to, so i would like to know how do i know when ive banged the starnut far enough and how do i bang it down?cheers lawrence
Ash-Kennard
i did my replacements yesterday, put a bolt in the thread of the starnut and gently tap it down with a hammer/mallet. to about 1cm lower than you want you cut it. i made the mistake yesterday of just drawing a line around the top of my stem, then found out that my headcap countersinks, so i filled 4mm off the top, fun. then just whack it all together, simple as that, DO NOT HIT THE STAR NUT DOWN TOO FAR big mistake, as it cannot come back up. actually measure from your cut line 1-1.5 cm into the tubeEDIT: bad advise lol Edited March 16, 2007 by ash-kennard
Ali C
put the forks, headset and spacers on as you will be having them, put the stem on and get a small screwdriver and put it in the slot in the back of the stem above the top bolt, spin the stem around and that scratches a perfect line at the correct hight to cut.to put the star nut down, pop a bolt in it and just whack it down with a hammer, try to keep it straight, but its no big problem if its a tiny bit out.
