How Does A Dirt Jump Type Frame Compare To A Stock Trials, Confused?

I have a 20" old monty here which is basically an evolution of a BMX if you look at the frame. I've seen a few pics of 26" stock trials frames and I'm trying to see where they have evolved from? I'm looking at the current crop of dirt jump bikes out there and they look quite similar.

Can some one do me a basic run down of the differenty types of bike and their basic differences and geometries, my Monty has a wheel base of about 1m, I assume that makes it a short mod?

Thanks for any info.

For a start have you not noticed the different bb heights, the fact that trials frames don't have saddles or maybe that nearly all trials frames have nice magura mounts opposed to disks, tut tut. No I'm only messing mate, but there really is a huge difference, mainly in weight and strength.

I think you should either leave trials-forum or buy a unicycle

eh?

shush or write something useful...

Anywho, yeah, you pretty much got it, mods were originally modified bmxs, and stock bikes were just small xc frames (sometimes not even that small! 18inch frames weren't uncommon), then later on dirt frames were used, as full on trials frames were just so expensive and rare, it wasn't really until about 2000 when trials bikes really started to evolve properly. Stock and mod bikes are certainly very different from what they used to be-seatless, super low, sometime super long, look queer..etc but its all for a practical reason (apparently)...you have probably already noticed the lack of gears in most cases, the wide rims and the gash array of nasty colours for every part you desire, just like the early 90's :P

Your monty is classed as a short bike, but don't worry, its no bad thing, don't get into the frame of mind like many people on here that you need a long low and silver frame to be good, its down to personal preference, and seeing as you are a beginner it will help you that its shorter as its gonna be easier to pull up and stuff, i had a monty very similar to yours but with modern parts, and i loved it, actually the nicest mod i have ever ridden :)

I had noticed the seat thing yes and the general use of a single low gear :$

I hadn't noticed the BB height so that is something new learnt :P

any more clarification on the other geometry differences and why they have evolved that way? I am interested.

Hopefully by next weekend I should have enough bits to make a free wheeling monty uni-cycle (not sorted a rear wheel yet :S )
