Dan6061
Say you've had a BB7? - What set-up did you have?Hayes Nine's are grabby and 'on/off', feel nice too, like Magura's, and really solid. - Ever considered one?

Personaly I dont like having bugger all modulation though.Magura disc breaks are really nice, but seem to leak alot and stuff. So not all that reliable. Davetrials
ive had a hfx 9 but it was only 160, that was OK but no way near as good as i wantive used danny butlers magura and OH MY GOD, thats so immense.
gr8grumble
i had a 160 bb7, that beast coulda stopped a tank. now running a hayes cable and it works perfect for a mod.gray.
Inspired Dave
ive used danny butlers magura and OH MY GOD, thats so immense. His Mono Trial is much better I think the thing with discs is that they have to be set up well and left alone, a BB7 should be stick-through-the-spokes-like compared to most other brakes. The main downside is the weight.
Greetings
Louise on a mod and it was goodM525 180 on a stock and it was weak, but adequate for chill out ridingMono Trial 180 on a stock and it's stronger than the other brakes but just way too weak for front wheel moves where you need the wheel to lock instantly. Getting a BB7 soon, that should sort everything.

Phil H
Same things been happening with my mate for a long time.Started with a magura marta of his T-Rex, had absolute hell with it, never worked well atall! Then got a hope mono mini with his echo control which didnt work well atall! Then got another magura marta which didn't work when he go it however he changed the disk experimented and now works. In the end decided to stick with vee for the front, disks seems alot of hassle.Cheers, Phil

Trebor
bye bye forks.Helloooo law suit!205mm rotor with Mono trial would be insane, not quite as on/off as BB7, it depends what you want really. I used to freakin' love my old Hope Mini 205 with gothic rotor on my Megamo - insane on-off ness. As Tarty-Dave said, set it up well and leave it alone! Can gothic rotors work with the mono trials? Are they even produced anymore?
CurtisRider
Can gothic rotors work with the mono trials? Are they even produced anymore?i always found gothics made my brakes loose power...weird!anywho, i'm now on my third bb7 (after swapping between discs and vs), fecking awesome brakes, and my current ones staying now, cos its just so damn good i had a mono trial 180mm, they are temperamental, have a nasty spongey feel and really aren't all that great, not sure if the new version is any better either, i've found all the mono range to be poor, with flexy calipers and a horrible feel compared to the old ones...expensive toojuicy 5 was awesome, had a 180mm on my mod and it was ludicrously nice, just like a bb7 but hydro and not adjustable, although the juicy 7 caters for the adjustability... hayes are toss-too wooden feeling and the calipers on mine always ended up leaking, magura are utterly appalling, cheese metal, leaky seals and just wank performance too for all of mine.the old silver hope mini is the tats, try and blag one of them and get a nice new rotor and pads for it, get you disc mounts faced and leave it, sooorted lovely brakespersonally, I'd just get a bb7, keep it clean and you wont have troubles in the power department, nor will it break the bank! Walleee
I dont have much experiance with using disc's really.Used avid's on a hardtail about a year ago and I thought they were fantastic breaks, but for trials I like to have hydraulic.I use a louise FR (180mm), and while for aesthetics i'd like to have a smaller disc, im really impressed with the performance so far. I can lock the front wheel easily, have ounces of modulation and it's silent. I've tried a mates stardard louise(not FR 160mm) and it was also pretty good, but he is using the standard disc with it, which looks gash. The FR disc is wavy and drilled. ( I might drill it out a bit more but worry about loosing modulation). ANY Mono Trials (i've used 2/3) have been shit frankly. They didn't lock until pulled half way into the bar (sometimes more) and the lever's didn't have much feel, because they pulled so far in, modulation was crap as it took alot of movement at the lever. I really havn't been impressed by them at all, but I suspect that's due to shit set-upUsed deore on the rear of a jump bike and they are fantastic, really good brakes for those on a budget. Jamie_Neal
I've got a 203 hayes disc with an Avid BB5 and an sd7 lever. It's much more powerful than the 185 avid disc I was running with it before. I wouldn't say it's the most on/off brake ever but I think that's down to the 13 stone it's having to stop. Tomm
For pure power I would get a BB7. Mine was mentally grabby and powerful. Some BB7s are better than others though, some just never seem to quite bed in properly. I don't see the point in the 203 though, the 185 (when working well) is easily good enough. I've now got a Juicy 7 (185) which has taken about a year (!) to bed in, but it's really nice now. Almost as good hold as the BB7, and tons more modulation. Feels nicer too. But like I say, it's taken about a year to get to this stage - I was considering going back to the BB7. Nice brake - Better than the BB7 overall. My friend's got a Juicy5 on his DH bike (203 rotor) and it's not as powerful at all. Perhaps it hasn't bedded in properly though.I always wonder what the Shimano brakes are like. People love them on XC/FR/DH bikes, but no-one uses them in trials. Hmmm. Also don't get Hayes Nines - I've got them on me XC bike. They're nice enough and good modulation, but nowhere near enough lock for trials IMO.In conclusion, get a BB7 or a Juicy7.

matt rushton
The new mono trial 07 version. I use a 160 rotor on a 26" and the locking power. It really is immense. If you want truley amazing stopping power then the 180 or 205 will be mental.Matt Rushton
Ash-Kennard
or a 203 bb7 for shomines too good, it pisses me off

RobinJI
Some people just seem to have bad luck with discs. Me and Broomer have really similar breaks on our bikes. Mono trials front on trials bikes, and Shimano LX on his curtis and my mongoose. But While my LX's have been flawless and amazing breaks, both of his have cocked up, and the same seams to go for the mono-trials. Mines been great despite spending months on a bent mount, although we both got them 2nd hand, so I could have just been luckier.Shimano discs I do think are under-rated, I'd never think of using my LX's for trials, they have amazing feeling and stop from speed briliantly, but just dont really lock. Deore M525s I would love to try for trials, although they need some nice pads in them, the shimano pads do really suck balls and last bugger all time.
