trials rules
So yeah im virtualy at the point of buying a car - its looking likely its going to be a Mini! Waay! Anyway i was wondering what documents etc do i need to ask for from the current owner. All i can think of is service history, MOT sheets and the registration documents. Is there anything else? F-Stop Junkie
When I bought my car it didn't have a handbook, and bugger all service history as 'the bloke's brother in law was a mechanic and did all the work...'All you need is a V5 and a current MoT certificate, and I'd recommend an HPI check. I think it's £25, and it confirms that it hasn't been written off, that all the serial numbers are correct and there's no outstanding finance on it (Not much of a concern if it's a Mini!). it's a good check against it being a cut and shut, or the details from a written off car put on something stolen. Plus if it turns out they're wrong, they'll refund the cost of purchase. All I will say is don't get excited at the first car you see. Be cynical and check the car as much as you can. If it turns out there's been no oil in the engine for six months, well you're stuffed. If it's an older car, or something like a Mini that anyone can fix, don't get too put off by a lack of service history or reciepts. It's probably been many years since it's seen a main dealer.Make sure it's solid and safe and that everything major is ok as far as you can tell. If it seems dodgy or too good to be true, walk away. There's plenty more out there!
nmt_oli
If your looking at minis, bodywork rust is of key importance. this is hard and expensive to fix, mechanicals arent.A mini with a mint body, that barely gets you home is likely to be a cheaper fix and last longer than a mini that you can see the road when you look down, but goes like stink. trials rules
Thanks for the replies. Yeah my dad works for the government so can get free HPI checks which is good I've also just found this website which details all the things to look for when buying a mini and paperwork which will no doubt be of use to other potential buyers.Cheers again
