Tripod's

This question sounds stupid I know, apart from the obvious things, like long exposure, and keeping the camera steady with out you having to, what do people actually use a tripod for?

This isn't so much a question about "How should I?", its a general question; what do you use them for?

I'm planning on getting one this weekend to get a few urban shots that are well overdue for a snap.

Is this not a bit like asking what the wheels are for on a car?

Not really, you need wheels on a car.

Yeah, it's all pretty much been mentioned what you might want it for - long exposures, some portraits, long (heavy) lens sports/wildlife shooting, panoramas.

Basically any time you'll need to steady the camera either due to weight, exposure, or need for the camera to be still.

Only time I usually need a tripod for is my flash when I've got noone to hold it!

:S Not really because for alot of stuff tripods are by no means essential whereas you cant do anything in a car without wheels :) .

But yer i just use mine for reasonably long exposure stuff, self portraits, sequences, filming and general landscape stuff that kinda doesn't really have to be that long exposure but tripod makes it easier.
