I have just bought a KMC chain. Its the K710, I cut it to the right size, and attached the half link and the clip thing, (with out then spacer) well the chain link bent, its sort of fixed, but its not too good, where can I buy JUST the link from? [the link below].. I had one that looked like that but when I came to fitting it, it was too wide

(The chains this one, if it helps)

Sorry for a question in your topic but no really worth a new topic...

I've never bought a chain... do they come with half-links?

no, not unless its a full half link chain. what he is talking about is a split link, which allows quick installation and removal of a chain. you can buy half links seperately from most shops if you feel the need to run one, but try and get a decent quality one as the cheaper ones wont last long

iv found sometimes when using a decent chain tool that it splays the plate out a bit, therefore when you re-join it you get the pin 3/4 way back in, then you need to "bend" or flex the link your joining a little bit, hard to explain, its easier to show someone how to do it. but if you just try and RIVE it back together it nakers the link (splits it and the chain will snap pretty quick!!!)

alot of people are snapping KMC's and its purely because they are not being joined properly, for people who use the split link (usually on a mod bike) they snap it when they trap it between the freewheel and the chainstay.

do you mind me asking why villagedave???? (in a serious manner, not an arguementative manner)

iv not seen a chain snap on the split link before and if it was an unsafe idea they wouldnt send a split link in the chain, the idea of a split link is to stop people joining the chains incorrectly and them snapping under in correct installation.

hiya Wayne!

Just my thoughts on the subject.

I use sram pc 58 chains. im a very smooth rider. everytime ive hurt myself its been the split link snapping.

Clive leeson advised me just to join the chain with a chain tool( i know how to join a chain correctly) and keep an eye on it. ever since, it hasnt been a problem.

i understand that every scenario is different , and believe that split links are just not as strong as a proper link.

maybe the kool chains split link is better?

ta da!
