Jonnyb92
I have recently grinded my rim and I would class it as not being a light grind lol. I did this due to many slips and constant bum ache, but to cut to the chase:There has been many debates on what pads to get for a grind (hard or soft compound). currently have the standard magura pads (red) and will be needing some new ones soon. I hear the soft compound pads wear out quickly on a grind and this is understandable as it acts like a rubber, although they do grip well.Alot of my friends think that hard compound pads will last longer, but i disagree. If a hard compound pad were to catch sharply on the grind, rather than flex, would it break away/chip off? Any comments would be helpful and feel free to tell me what you are running!I might aswell add will a brake booster make much difference on braking power and hold?Cheers,Jon. powerz
Well if you have a medium to harsh grind then i would stay clear of soft compound pads like zoo pads unless you want to be paying out nearly £20 every week, as they lasted 3 days on my harsh grind max and i was riding about 30 mins each day.on my harsh grind i was using koxx browns which griped amazingly and never sliped wet or dry.I now have a light grind and im using rock pads blue and they are holding very well.(but are over rated) BUT if your running a medium to harsh grind then these would probably be the best choice as they are reasonable hard compound but not as hard as koxx browns.I have never had any of my brake pads brake or chip off at all.As for the booster, i brought a gu booster for my gu and it didn't realy feel any differant but it does stop the frame flexing, so it must be helping. Token
Agreed with powerz, stear clear of soft compound pads! Koxx Browns are a really safe bet, as they'll last ages and have a good amount of hold an bite.Regarding whether or not a booster will make any difference, the answer is definitely! Your riding a t-pro and if I remember correctly, my t-pro flexed like mad. The more the frame moves away from the rim then less pressure can be applied to the rim, the more pressure the more the brake pad material will 'mold' over the grind when you squeeze the brake rather than the frame moving out. Jonnyb92
Thanks very much, good advice!Any other people are still welcome to post and further help me.Are there any good Onza pads for a medium/harsh grind? Thanks,Jon
Token
The only Onza pads that are available are the Citrus ones, I've used these and they are pretty good pad for a light grind. They are definitely soft as I after setting them up and taking the down a hill to bed them in I lost about 1.5mm of pad which is a fair bit of pad in the space of 2 minutes. Infact come to think of it, my personal preference, but I'm sure alot of people will agree with me is that Ali C's blue joypads are really really good, even better that they're only a tenner for 8mm of pad material! So definitely worth giving them a try for the money, also quite a few people mentioned that they're a really hard pad and say that they'll outlast their grind. Jonnyb92
Very useful information guys.I am definitely considering upgrading to rock pads after checking the description on Tarty too, but as soon as I have some spare cash on my hands (little poor at the minute). While this subject is open, what are your views on braided hoses for maguras as mine, plus many of my friends, seem to snap off once a month!Any info welcome,Jon. Token
Like powerz said above, the Rock Pads are over rated. See for yourself, but then again they're 18 quid which I think is quite expensive, look in the pad review section and see for yourself that people think the joypads are better than Cousts. On the other note, can't say I've ever seen a magura hose snap off, hear of it but I think it just happens to some maguras that dont have tight fittings. So I wouldn't go upgrading your hose if you dont need to, its worth spending out if you keep breaking them but otherwise you wont see any benefit, just a hole in your pocket. Ali C
only a tenner for 8mm of pad material!amount of material changes from pad to pad, just thought I would add that. (they are all hand made by me, its very hard to get consistant thicknesses)
