Yup, that's all you need to do, it asks you to restart, restart if you want to, if not just click exit without restart.

thanks. oh about you backing up your stuff? know anyone with a laptop or another computer? send all your files over a lan.

does the process IEXPORER.EXE always dispaly as using 90% of your CPU time in your task manager?

if so there could be adware or something (or a toolbar)using system resources.

can you screenshot the "performance" page in the task manager please mate.

make sure you are not running two antivirus programs and go through "add or remove programs" and uninstal programs that you dont use and look suspect

right...

if IE is eating 90% cpu usage you're either on the radio-times website or some filth has installed itself - probably a BHO (ask google), there's a program called BHOdemon that spots and removes these things.

A quick test would be to go into your IE settings and disable 3rd party browser extensions. reboot the machine and see if the problem goes away

Task manager doesn't show you everything - its easy to hide or disguise a process you don't want people seeing so don't read too much into the task list

your last resort(reinstalling from scratch)....

partitioning the disk or putting a second disk in to copy your shit onto WILL work - the chap who said it wouldn't is wrong.

you copy your stuff over to the second partition, format the windows partition and install a fresh copy. voila! nice new windows, no stuff lost and no more nasties (unless you run one). you should be able to download a copy of windows and use your legal key.

on software....

there's nothing wrong with macafee antivirus - i've been running it and zonealarm on my main PC for 2-3 years and have never caught anything nasty from the interweb. as far as the firewall and antispyware stuff go I wouldn't touch them. Like Danny says, Norton is evil so get shot of that sharpish (that's actually worth a reinstall IMO).

I've got two drives C: and D:

If i put all the windows shiz and stuff i want to keep(the folder named Windows in C drive and some games) into my D: drive and click format on my C drive, will it be like a fresh install after i put windows back into the C drive?

Basically using my D drive as a partition of the C.

Am i a retard?

--------------------

With the Ie thing, i'm scanning with Spy Sweeper and it's found:

System Monitor found: chatwatch

Adware found: starware toolbar

Adware found: starware.com hijack

Adware found: torrent101

Rest is just a shit load of spy cookies from ads on websites.

fraid so

:P

if you go down that route you need to reinstall windows on C: the format will wipe lots of stuff out that you need to boot the machine up.

this is how it works...

copy all the stuff you want to keep (installers, porn, documents etc) onto d:

put the windows CD in

format c:

install windows on c:

install all your software (you did keep the installers didnt you ?).

got it ?

it's always a good idea to keep all your documents and on a seperate drive or partition from windows and your apps cos in the event that you knacker windows you can just wipe the c: and reinstall.

ie. windows & apps on c: porn on d:

Conveniently enough you can tell My Documents to live on d: if you go to it's properties (its safest to do this on a clean install)

Erm is your D: called restore or something and small in size? I.e. <10gb?

If so id probably leave it alone as packard bell have some shit way of restoring the drive off another partition.

I didn't understand a word of that poopipe, sorry

And pipe, i don't keep installers, they just use up too much space, or so i thought. Lookd like i've got some downloading to do.

Danny - my D drive is 111 GB (120, i guess) C is 29.9 GB (30) :o i was meant to have 160 GB!

Mat, i love you! I'll PM you my address. And i'll pay you back in the next life.

Thought so.

How the f**k do i uninstall McafSHITE?

seriously dude.

just wait until you get the disc

If you're bored in the meantime you could try this (ill try to use short words :P)

open IE

click the tools menu

select Internet options

click on the advanced tab

scroll down to where it says "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) "

Untick the tickybox next to "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) "

click the OK button

close All your IE windows and restart your computer

When your machine starts up again your google toolbar will have buggered off - as will all the other shite that get's tacked onto IE

try running like that for a while. If the problems go away then you have a nasty Browser Helper Object attached to IE.

If that is the case....

Go to this page, read the text so you understand what it does then download and install BHODemon AND the Help file from the links at the bottom of the page (FFS virus check everything first).

Go back to you Internet options and Tick the tickybox next to "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) "

Restart your computer

Run BHODemon and read the help file to learn how to use it. It's pretty simple underneath really - it'll identify what's tacked itself onto IE and tell you where to find it in the registry.

I've only used it on windows 2000 so f**k knows whether it works on XP
