steve1rc
Although being a student I could come during the week, I agree it might be wisest to just open it weekends and the odd evening. You would ideally need to find some other way of using the building during the week though so you're not wasting your money on the presmises. No idea what though. Find some way of renting it out for business functions/training days or something? Don't ask me how since it will be full of trials fodder but use your imagination I guess...That sounds like pretty good idea to me, although in the hols you might aswell open it everyday. I reckon there should be a skatepark too, because that attracts loads of peope.Steve Edited January 27, 2007 by steve1rc
Fish-Finger-er
is it really gunna be £15k for what is a fairly small area. (75 foot by 60 foot maximum. its rather small really). surely youd get it cheaper than that. as in we wer looking at a 40 foot x 40 foot lock up,for car projects. between 3 of us.and thats 150m2,(which comes in at half what you said your smallest venue will be) and it was around £164 a month, which is £1 per metre per month(the ones we looked at had varying ceilings, some at 10 foot, some at 35 foot) whereas youd be paying over £2.50 per square metre per month.also id strongly look into gettin a petition done, and presenting it to your council, as a bid for grants. looking at some of our local skateparks that are indoor, wrexham must of been 90 foot x 120 foot easy.and sometimes wed go there at weekends, and be no more than 10 people in there all day, payin about £4 -£7 each. and it had 2-3 permnanent staff, was open in the week+ evenings, when i can imagine itd be just as quiet, if not worse. and must of had insurance to cover people between5-18, as well as over 18's. which would be way more costly.so i reckon theres gotta be some government/council grant. TomR
Working with the LA's is the best bet, and outdoor & unstaffed would be best as a start, if it succeeds then expend and improve with the indoor idea.Search your local authorities site for info on NEAP's LEAP's and LAP's (Neighourhood equipped areas of play, Local equipped areas of play and Local areas of play) design guides. Theres sometimes seperate info available on 'wheeled activities' ie skateparks/dirtjump areas. On one LA site i even saw something about a designated where, under council supervision, things can be constructed by kids themselves for wheeled activities (ie a designated dirt jump area). joshywa
This may not be the best sugestion but there isnt a huge market for a trials park, yes you may get a good selection of people on here saying they'd use it but in comparrison to other sports were tiny!!! bmx/skateing in this country has a huge following and even skate parks strugle to make money. ape skate in thornaby closed 4 times because of kids falling over and claiming on insurance (thus putting theyre insurance up and driving them out of buisness) another thing to think about is mid week (outside school hol's) it would be dead !!!sorry sound realy negative i know but i think they're all fair points to be honest to realy make it work you would need:to be based somewhere like the midlands (easy for everyone to get too)some form of legal deal with users (a disclamer of some sort claiming no responseability)a very cheap renta constant flow of users (not just kid on school hol's)another option may be to buy an old disused ware house ???? yes it may need work to get it water tight ect... but the morgage on it probably wouldnt be much more than renting a new unit, problem with that idea is if you were willing to risk owing that much money to a bank, but in the worst case with owning land you could sell it to a developer (which is what happened to ape skate).meh thats all i can think of at the min
PaRtZ
have had a memory/thought though..My first ever "job" was volunteer work for a community project. Basically people donated their unwanted bikes, we fixed them up and sent them off to africa. I got only travel expenses as a "wage" which was £5 a day. As well as volunteers, the project also allowed chavs to pay their community service offIm sure if you can convince the LA that your company would help youngsters who both do trials, and dont, then im sure theyd give you backing for it
