Hopping To Front Wheel

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some tips on hopping to front wheel, just on a kerb etc. I find this move very un-natural, (scared of going over the front / snapping my Onza lite-guy forks, and anything else I can think off to put me off!), and don't seem to be able to commit to landing on the front wheel at all.

I'm locked into pulling endos with my arms very straight and my legs tucked, but when I watch vids it seems like a slightly different technique that I just can't seem to adjust to.

So any advice / is this a hard move which takes a while to get into? (I'm studying Trashzen's tut's... just want a bit of rider input)

Cheers :)

it used to scare crap out of me....

practice rolling bunnyhops into nose manuals up curbs first. it's less frightening cos you're much more likely to drop the back rather than shoot over the bars - that gets you used to the movements involved .

once you can do that at speed you'll have no worries about going up to front sideways with the brake on

Thanks poo man!

Yeah` just looking for little tricks or techniques people have found to help them with this move. (pretty useless topic I know, but I'm desperate to improve!)

.... right, I'm off out to try again. Will post pics of my smashed face when I get back! :P

.... no worries Ogre, more info regarding the front the better!

edit: JESUS, the rain stops and I've just taken a chunk of skin off my brake finger fixing the bumper on my car. f**k sake!

Erm i find its best to aim for trying to go over the front, you should then find a natural balance between being scared of face planting and trying to face plant.... some people call it the balance point.

Its good to just practice up a curb or some small wall with no drop behind it. When you land try and get your weight over the front so you wheel sticks and you back risers, then you can let the brake of a little and roll to flat or attempt to huck the bike underneath you, and switch to back.

As for hopping on the front. Again you need to be right over the front, and try and find the balance point, so you can hop using your legs to get the bike up, and your arms to place the bike. the higher you go, the easier it is, but also more chance of going over(which generally doesnt hurt as mucha s you would of thought).

Hey dude. I actually just learnt to do this like last week I was chuffed :)

Basically I practised with a pallet and a curb and changing the distance. Anyway the technique, having only just learnt this im not the best person to be giving pointers but I think its all about getting the confidence to throw your weight forward. Start off with like a small gap so if you put the front down you front wheel would be well on the curb. Then just practise practise. Hardest thing I found was getting a good wheelswitch in after but I have now perfected that (Y).

Right I'm really struggling with this! I keep trying from flat up a curb and it doesn't seem to want to work

I a little hop then preload and hop again throwing my weight forward and putting the front wheel where I want it to go and manage to get my rear wheel onto the curb, but in doing this my rear wheel never seems to leave the ground. it feels like I'm just rolling along then flicking myself up the curb!

I just don't seem to be able to commit the back and the front end at the same time :S

what am I doing wrong?

Any help would be ace!!

Yeah` that's exactly how I feel, I don't know why, but I think hopping to something a little higher may be easier? Say 12" .... meh I can't explain it! >_<

Like it's less comitment / going over the bars etc. Would look better too! :-

iv only just started to learn this move to f wheel but i find it helps sooo much more if you learn on an object higher than a curb. when gaping to a curb as its so low you have to go over the front more, which is scarier and harder to commit. if you are higher then you dont go over the front as much.

also i learnt it by learning sidehops to front wheel from my back wheel. i then started getting further back, i find it less scarry if your not at 90degrees to the wall etc, if you start off sidehopping and gradually get further back and facing more forward. should help
