Cramps At The End Of A Day Riding

A few things that seem to be happening alot now to me... I'm pretty sure this is trials related, but is there anything i can do to help stop these things.

The worse of them all is cramps, after a hard day riding (sometimes in the middle of the day), I get really tense achey pains in my legs, forearms and fingers, when i go to bed i can't move because it hurts so bad :| has anyone got any ideas how i can stop this from happening? does it happen to anyone else?

any help would be apreciated :)

The cramp can be related to dehydration so make sure you drink plenty when you're out riding or when you get back. Water on its own is OK, but you need some salt in there, so things like fruit juice or lucozade etc are good. And stretch the muscle out if it hurts.

stretch it ***! seriously stretch it out before your ride, and start up slowly dont just go bam into the biggest thing you can ride. and as already said take on fluids, water is ok, but your definately want something with a bit of sugar and a some salts in there. but being honest i do all this and i still ache for a few days after a ride, mainly my shoulders and back.

once your done watching the tv or whatever after your ride sit and stretch it, really does help.

cheers for the help guys, really has helped, made me realise i can't go out and batter my body for 6 hours, and do nothing to help repair myself... if that makes sense... just bought cod liver oil tablets... started my daily dose, will take fruit juice out each time i ride and will deffinately stretch more before and afterwards :)

It really sounds like I'm not the only one, so just aswell i asked the question :P Yeah thats pretty much it... its not like just now and then either, everywhere seems to click all the time. i shall follow all the advise given :) thanks so so so much.

gonna start back up boxing again, used to make us stretch a hell of alot when i used to box and i never got cramps half as bad, i don't know why i didn't think of stretching before... well i did... but i never know which muscles to stretch in accordance to the muscles used for trials, and the proper technique required to do so.

more help apreciated for me, and the forum (Y)

Same here, ankles and knees click like crazy all the time, especially so in the mornings. I think its to do with constantly locking out your joints when you hop.

From what I'm told it's a build up of calcium in the joints. However im sitting here now, making gestures like one would do to feel a girls tit's and my finger's are clicking like crazy! Generally I'll get one big click, in my thumb, and i won't be able to make it click when I move it slowly, only when the movement is quick.

Regarding cramp and ache's after riding, Im way too familiar with this after starting back again. Shoulders, arms and leg's tend to be very sore after a ride. I do try to warm up slowly, but generally it's an 'on bike' warm up as opposed to actually stretching, I did have a look at some stretches the other day which im going to start doing in my room just before going out on the bike.

Clicking in joints is apparently due to carbon dioxide (gas) in you joint fluid. Then when you move, a bubble forms, pressure builds up and then it bursts with a clicking noise. But I don't really believe that, I'm not convinced that a bubble can be as loud as my ankle.

I get clicks in just about all my joints some times, though my ankles are the worse. It seems to be a fairly common thing in trials riders, but I've not heard of that many 'normal' people with the same problem.

I get clicking in my knees a lot, 'tis really annoying. I can slowly feel the click build up until it makes a really loud pop/click sound. Then it's ok for a while after.

I get it when i sit on a chair and support my hamstring so my leg is hanging, then when i move my lower leg back and forwards (so i'm moving the knee joint) i can slowly feel the click build up. It feels horrible.

i heared on the radio that if you drink a few cups of coffee or tea after a work out, it gets rid of the lactic acid build up and doesnt make your muscles ache as much??? something thats in cafeine that makes this happen, i duno

Everytime I rotate my right ankle it clicks, every single step I take when I walk (unless I walk like a lemon and don't let my joints 'flow') it clicks.

Am I basically buggered come old-age? It doesn't ever really hurt or anything like that. I have my codliver oil in the morning. So a bit of warning'd be nice!

but surely you want that build up? sure it aches for a few days, but its helping your muscles, making them stronger, and making you look beefcakier, bargain

i get clicks too, mainly my thumbs from when i broke them, they kinda seize up and i have to force them to bend, with a lovely reasuring crack noise when i do

but yeah, as said before, get plenty of fluids, and stretching does make a difference, i forget to do them usually, but when i do remember, i ride better to :P

muscle soreness is due to the hydrolisation of atp in the muscles, when the atp loses a proton, it lowers the pH and over time during anaerobic excercise overcomes the bodies ability to break it down naturally and the pH becomes so low it causes muscle burn and ache. its not directly the lactic acid that causes this.

and no you dont want it to happen totally, yes in sense because your bodies ability to handle acid build up and pro long the on-set muscle fatigue will improve but after excercise you want to recover from it as quickly as possible.

stretching, on take of fluids and having a decent diet are the only ways really, most people get it to varying degrees; eventually you'll body will improves its ability to handle it

Make sure you warm up AND cool down. make sure you drink enough. Make sure you have enough salt, and make sure you eat a couple of banana's, which contain potassium.

Glucosamine with chondroitin, available from holland and barrett is good for joints/cartilage growth and strengthening. You could use that too.
