Am I Being A b*****d?

Right - the story.

I use CD decks - I download electro, tech and funky house and breakbeat from places such as beatport and DJ Download (I don't use filesharing, as you get crap quality crap length tracks, any DJ will realise what that means).

Now, each track costs me £1.50, I go through the websites and hand pick them. I have almost a suitcase full, which has cost me well over £700 in total and has taken me hours and hours of time to select, preview, buy & download.

Now the problem:

I just got a text from a mate saying:

"Russell is buying the same decks as you on finance, but he needs music, can he copy your CD's?"

Now the answer is no, and nobody will change my mind on that, I just want to know whether you think i'm being a git.

The way I see it is that I paid loads for it, built my way from nothing to running a big event in Hastings every month and I don't see why people should be able to take shortcuts. Plus he should buy music he likes.

I'm quite offended that he didn't ask me, but someone else did for him, and also that they didn't say "Russell has offered £40 if you'll copy some tunes for him".

Which i'd find acceptable...

Hummmmmm....

mate, i get called a minge bag for charging petrol when i drive somewhere to ride, and when we ride and they keep asking me to take them somewhere and i say no.

The point is, if it costs you and not them, they'll try to rape you. You ain't bein a b*****d.

People are bastards. You are fair...

tell him he can get a copy for the price you paid?

thus you recuperate your costs, or sell him at slightly less than you paid as he is more likely to say yes and you still recuperate your costs significantly but dont sell him all of them?

thats some way of doing it but no your not being picky, he would be gaining the tracks for nothing.

You know what you're right, i never thought of it that way.

And i think i would be the same and say no, it only seems fair that way.

Plus like you have said it's all music you have spent hours on finding and buying. So it only seems right he should do the same, but for music he likes/wants. It would be like getting a big tattoo on your back, and something that you have spent a lot of time thinking about and designing and thats personal to you, then having someone copy the exact one. Even if they paid you so that they can use it, it stil doesn't seem right. Meh thats not a great example, but you get what i mean.

As he sounds like someone you don't particularly know, I would definately say no. Sharing music between friends is fine, I often lend of borrow CDs with mates, but if I were in your position, and some one got their mate to ask me to copy them, especially at such a high value, I would just say no.

He is a mate, but not one I see very often...

I have no objections to copying a greeatest hits album for someone, this just seems different as the tunes define me as a DJ, they are my style, hence I chose each one rather than buying a compilation...

It just seems really cheeky... like if he said "oh this tunes wicked, copy it!" I probably would, but not blag my whole record box!

Glad you all agree anyway :)

Yeah I agree, when you got yours you didn't go and copy a whole bunch of music of someone else, you evidently went and picked songs and paid for them, so why should he be any different?

Here's what I'd do so as not to look a fanny. Put the ball back in his court, tell him it'd take ages to copy all of them or something and just say if he sends you a list of stuff he's looking for and you have any of it you will copy that for him, because chances are he won't be able to name half the stuff you got if any, so it'll be a five minute job for you, and if he'd done that in the first place you'd have probably done it for him without question, just because he's takig the piss asking for the lot I guess!

I agree with you, taking shortcuts in life is no way to live.

You could give him links as to where he can download his own tracks, or give him a couple of old tracks so he has something to play with and get used to the deck if you felt bad about it :)

As others have said, you're doing the right thing. Id feel the same, ie really pissed off, if I found out people were copying my DVD and giving to their mates... but then they would be in the same situation, they would have been asked if they could have a copy but then they bought the dvd, so they would prob say no... or I could be VERY wrong! Hmm. But yeah, you're being fair!

especially if he'll be making money out of it.

for example my mate leant my adidas originals jacket to go home then he continually wore it into my college, after like a month he gave it back with an ink blob but left it in my brothers room, so i didnt see it till he left.

now i have 2 reasons not to wear it, 1 big ink blob, 2 everyone at my college will think its his haha.

kind of the same with you i suppose, if he starts using your music people may mock you for immitating him , when actually its the opposite.

I would be the same as well, its nothing personal but if he's willing to split the cost he's more than welcome.

Maybe tell him he can have a few tracks, but he'll have to see which ones he likes first. Or ask him if theres something in particular he wants. If you do give him all your music he'll be overloaded with it and won't know where to start listening.... you can even tell him that. If i had even over 200 songs given to me i wouldn't know which ones to listen to first and would want to skip to the next one to see what that ones like.... effectively missing what could make the song great in the last minute or so.

Is he new to it or not? If he is tell him he can have like 20 songs because it'll be in his favour to have fewer songs but learn how they go so he can mix them better.

I just sent him a text, purely saying:

www.djdownload.com www.beatport.com

That's all I wrote... lol...

I think he may get the hint when he sees £1.49 next to each track :P

I do feel harsh, but I know I shouldn't... strange...

I've never been one to leech from people so I guess I just find it weird that some people would even ask... If someone said "would you like a copy of this cd?" I may say yes, but i'd never actually ask for it.

Simple, charge him £1.50 for every track he uses. That way you're being a mate by saving him time by not downloading them all (Y)

No I think you're not. Its a shit feeling when you refuse something to your mates but its withiin reason so its ok

i was in a similar position recently, some guy from another band was reading through my lyrics folder, and found a set of lyrics that my band hadnt made into a song, because we just hadnt got the right riff, this guy asked if he could use them for his band, and when i said no,he replied with "but you arent using them!why cant i?" my response was "shit off" because, not blowing my own trumpet, but theyre good lyrics, just because we hadnt used them yet, doesnt mean we wouldnt.and besides, theyre personal, and they are what helps define the bands style.I think your being completely reasonable.if he wants to be any kind of a DJ,surely he should find his own style.fair play to you (Y)

f**k that, you are no way a b*****d. I absalutely f**king hate people who copy something of your own work.

This is not quite the same, can be seen as quite sad to be fair but it pisses me off no end.

Theres a site i go on where you can become a vip member if you get enough reputation points. You can get this for good quality posts etc. I spent a good year of my life during first year of uni getting pictures of girls arses and i created "the arse files" <--- thats the sad bit. Around 400 pictures, i uploaded the whole lot on to the website in a .zip file and got a decent amount of reputation and got my vip membership. Now what pisses me off is people are posting the individual pictures that i got and getting put as vip's also. My hard work.. it pisses me off so badly ughh..

there u go.. very pathetic reason for me to be on your side.
