Moped Passengers

Hey all,

When I'm 16 i my dad has said he will get me a moped and he said that when he was my age and he had one he was allowed to carry a passenger on the back (after passing the necessary 50cc license of course). Now i do not wish to take the 50cc license test if you can no longer take a passenger, as my dad has told me that there has been recent law changes and is not shure weather or not you can.

... so if you no longer can take passengers on the back i wont take the 50cc test as i can have L plates for 2 years without having the test.

so please, anybody with info on the subject, or just about mopeds generally or those 50cc scramblers please help out as i want some info from people that have actually ridden them and such.

Thank you so much,

Rorz!

With a full licence you can, with a provisional, you can't (Y)

(Y)

CBT (50cc test) is like £40 to £60 depending if you hire a bike or not

Full bike test is around £45 i think for the test but it is highly recomended to have some bike training before you take it!

(you wouldn't do your car test with out having driven a car on the roard or hadn't had any lessons!)

So to do the training you would have to do your CBT first so you can ride on the road.

Ive just rememberd that i had to take my CBT certificate to my full test so youve gotta do that first!

hope this helps

umm after reading your second paragraph where you said that you could ride just if you put L-plates on, do you mean you wont take the test and just put L-plates on? because you still have to take the test no matter what. If you want to ride anything motorised on the road you have to take a test wether it be a bike or a car.

And no you cant take a passenger on the back unless you've taken you full bike test which you have to be 18 for. also i do believe you have to have your cbt before you can take your full bike test which consists of a practical test consisting of driving around proving you can ride a bike safely, and a theory test same as a car licence test just more aimed at motorcycles, things like if you were on a two way road in a traffic jam, could you drive down the outside: answer no! thats illegal.

You also cant even when you've taken you full bike you can't straight away jump on a 1200cc bike you have to ride (i think) a 250cc bike for 1-2 years cant honestly remember, and then you can automatically ride any cc bike you wish.

just being thorough with my answer so some of that may come in useful. If not complain and ill add some more stuff ok?

Thankyou, i was under the impreshion you could take the 50cc test at 16 aswell as the CBT and that the 50cc license is enought to let you take a passenger, i am a bit gutted that i cant take a passenger until i am 18 because then i would have my car license. :(

My understanding of it, derived from pages on the dvla or what ever it is for bikes website; at 16 you can - ride a moped with an engine capacity smaller than 50cc and less than 13HP (i think), you need a CBT to ride the >50 bike... at 17 you can ride anything up to 125cc, not sure what HP it is...

How cool am i:

Compulsory basic training (CBT)

CBT is a course of compulsory basic motorcycle training which must be completed before a learner moped or motorcycle rider is allowed to ride unaccompanied on the road with L-plates, D-plates in Wales. CBT was introduced in 1990 to help reduce the very high accident rate among inexperienced motorcyclists.

You will need to complete CBT if:

you want to ride a moped (engine not over 50cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50km/h (approx.31mph)

you want to ride a motorcycle

If you obtained your car licence before 1 February, 2001 you do not need to complete a CBT to ride a moped.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What does CBT involve?

The CBT course involves five elements:

introduction

practical on-site training

practical on-site riding

practical on-road training

practical on-road riding

The five elements have to be completed in sequence, although the order of the exercises within the element can be varied. You will only move on to the next element when your instructor is satisfied you have learnt the necessary theory and demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic level. Trainees must, by law, receive a minimum two hour on-road ride in Element E.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Certificate of completion (DL 196)

When all five elements have been satisfactorily completed, a certificate of completion, called the DL196, is issued. This is a legal document which validates the relevant entitlements on your driving licence. It is important that the holder of a DL196 considers the following points:

a DL196 certificate validating a provisional moped or provisional motorcycle entitlement lasts for two years. CBT will have to be retaken if both theory and practical tests are not passed within the two year certificate life

for moped entitlement only, if you pass your car driving test whilst your DL196 is still current or complete a CBT course and obtain a DL196 after passing your car test, the certificate is not subject to expiry. You will therefore need to keep your DL196 certificate safely. Please note that this applies to mopeds only, for riding motorcycles as a learner the DL196 remains valid for two years

Once you have your certificate you are advised to take additional training to pass your theory and practical tests and qualify for a motorcycle or moped licence. You must take the DL196 certificate with you when you present for the practical test.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where and how much?

Only instructors certified by the Driving Standards Agency can teach CBT at an approved training body (ATB). ATBs must have instructors who have successfully completed a two day assessment and have sites approved by DSA for off-road training

The cost for the course varies typically from £70 to around £100. Most ATBs offer the loan of machines and helmets for the course. The cost of CBT may be incorporated into the cost of a full training course that leads to a motorcycle test.

Try DVLA for further info on any road subject...

But, at the age of 16 in the uk, you can ride a 50cc moped on l plates AFTER you have passed your ctb test and got insured and are wearing a helmet, You can't carry a *pillion* until you have a full license wich unless you are over 21 you probably can't carry a pillion until you have had your license for 2 years, this is when you have no restrictions.

Its what you are calling a "passenger"

And when you are 17 and fancie taking your full bike test you can only get a 33bhp motorcycle for the first 2 years of having a full license i.e you cant be jumping onto a gsxr 1000

Plus it's only upto a 125cc

you not allowed to and you wouldn't recommend it either.?

Even on my scooter (modifyed 100cc speedfight 2 goes like shit for a ped 65ish?)

feels sluggy with a passenger - on my old ped is just didnt corner either (the speedfights ok though)

but just....... after crashing at low speed with someone on the back (laughing it off with pride shattered)

realises would i want someone on the back with no gloves not propper clothing (probs no helmet)

NO and with someone on the back at 65 your garunteed to wrap it round a post or think your

being clever pulling a massive wheelie off the line

i mean im no slow coach i go like shit off a shovel to most places.... but with a mate on the back i know

id just try an cut it that little bit TOO fine and kill us both

ANDDD, it doesn't sound like a hair drier, a lot beefier...

Only cause it's got a piece of shit exhaust on it.

pillion passengers are ok as long as you have your full moped licence but it will mean you can't get up a hill unless you de-restrict it which is illegal, your call.

To drive a 50cc scooter/moped, you have to have done yor CBT, insurance and tax, to go on the road. With out them all you can't. And at 16 you can't carry passengers no matter what, even if you have done yor CBT.

you need your CBT and your provisional aswell as the others you mentioned to go on the road and you can't carry a passenger but once you've got your full licence which is attainable at 16 you can carry a passenger. so the answer is yes it's legal but no you wouldn't want to do it

They go together in perfect harmony :) Sorry, made me larf.

Its not too slow supprises most of my friends when they go on the back...... comfortably hit 50+ with a mate on the back on a short streach...... however with my fatter mate on the back (well not fat same as me) it really didnt perfom the same felt like it does when the choke settles itself down :S

Call me old fashioned, but whats wrong with a piggy back?

"yes officer she wasnt a pillion she was on my back..... so TECHNICALLY thats legal right???"
