Network Needs Setting Up

Greetings

Recommended Posts

The situation is as follows:

Mum got herself a laptop and with the laptop came this funny box that is pictured below. I believe it's a router which will allow me to connect several computers to a network, including WLAN devices like a PDA.

What I want to do is connect dads computer via a cable and mums PC via wireless to my PC so they can access the internet.

My computer connects to the internet through a modem which is plugged in through a USB cable. This is an ADSL connection meaning it goes through a normal phone line (no idea if this is of any relevance to the subject).

So logically I should do the following. Plug my computer to the "internet" port on the router because my computer is the "source" of the internet connection. Then plug dad's cable to LAN1. This however doesn't seem to work. My pc doesn't detect the router and just says the connection is disabled.

Any idea how this should be done?

Settings within windows? I've no idea about this. No cd was included with this silly looking device.

This is how it looks like:

You need to make sure its an ADSL router, then connect the ADSL straight from the phone line to the router, and the router will handle the rest when you set it up.

Connecting the router to pc as the internet port wont work. Atleast, it shouldn't.

You might be able to make it work, if you have it going in via USB not sure though, need a SEPERATE LAN CARD no the integrated ethernet, doesnt work for some reason.

Go to My Network Connections, or whatever its called, bridge the connection via your USB connection and the seperate lan card, tell it to share the internet on this connection the connect the hub to your pc as your were planning to and it should work.

Did this with my xbox and it worked fine, however I cannot guantee it as its coming from a USB to begin with, sure you dont have a non USB cable to plug it into the router or the pc?

First things first.

Find out if its an ASDL Modem/Router (BT, Wannado, Etc) or a standard Ethernet Router (Telewest, NTL).

Chances are its the latter if a network cable fit in the 'internet' port. Meaning that as your on ADSL with a usb modem your stuck routeing the internet through the pc with the usb modem plugged into it.
