Nick Garland
On some headsets such as the hope you have a little piece of the headset you put on top of the cup itself, I shall try to find a pic, if you remove this, place the stem on top and then mark where the top of the stem is on the steerer tube, cut it to that level and then place the whole headset back together, should be the perfect height. On headsets without this such as my Echo, aim for between 3-5 mm, if its flush or too close to the top it will give you headset rock and your bike will ride pretty nasty.Headset spacers are good to use so long as you dont use too many as I believe it can add extra stress the to the headtube due to the extra leverage available above the headset, dont quote me on that though. Ali C
had 20mm of spacers on my ashton, got about 40mm on my current steed!
gianttrials
it needs enough space above the steerer tube to pull up and be tight, probably 3mm - 5mm should be okay, as for the star nut go to your local bike shop an ask to borrow there tool. it should then fit at the right distance and be straight aswell. better still fit a headlock they're much better and safer/secure,good luck, hope this helps, ben g
