dan the trials man
Hi allI was just wondering what gearing you would all recommend on my zoo pitbull for street. I know it comes up all the time but there was nothing precise in the search, i have a 22 on the front and a 17 on the back i run a hope xc but i was thinking about changing to a fixed hub with a freewheel. The best freewheels were all in 18t can some one help?ThanksDan
RobinJI
The gearing you're currently running is pretty hard. A lot of people run 22:18, this would probably solve your chain tension worries in the other thread too. I've always thought that the most commonly preferred gear ratio in trials works out as 30 gear inch, This is a measurement of gearing taking into account the wheel size. The ratios in yellow are all the ones around 30 gear inch. There's quite a few options. But depending on what you like there are loads of options of what you could run nearish to 30. The front sprocket size is up the left and the rear along the top.
ben_travis
see you have done it the complicated way IMO. but cheers anywaywhen i calculate it i normally divide the front cog by the rear cog. then higher the number = stiffer......suppose your way is correct when your wondering which gear is best for each bike size etc etc, where as mine is better for finding how much stiffer a gear will be.meh
max-t
Hahahaha 16 - 16 for me at the moment. I really hate it but i have no choice.
dan the trials man
I cant change to 18 yet because i have not got the money, what do you all think about changing to a freewheel though.
GTF
So a 22/17 on a 24" will be ligther than 18/15 on a stock?
bikerider
First started with 22/18, then 22/17now changed bikes and gone front freewheel, used 18/16 at first as recommended, but found it too easy. Use 18/15 now

Nick Garland
Ive had a variety of ratios over the years22-2022-1922-1822-1722-16 (yes I know hard, was an accident and didnt realise)20-1720-1616-1316-1417-14I have to say out of the lot my favourites would be22-1820-17 (possibly the nicest)16-1417-14They are all pretty similar, I am on 17-14 at the moment, its abit harder than 16-14 but abit lighter than 22-18. Its between 22-18 and 20-17, good for taps as speed can be built, also good for techy stuff as its not too hard that its a mission to use, yet its not too light for rolling gaps etc.

GTF
I had 18:13, but that was too hard, so I changed to 18:15 and that is perfecto!
max-t
Im running 18:16But 18:18 felt really nice on Gavin Badfords Bedfords ashton.....I disagree with you there, really horrible for street, but apparently benefits for natural according to the man himself. But meh, seems too light.
