James_Porter
i havent been driving long, bout a month and a half now but i have managed to do 9000miles in that time. travelling 30miles to work everyday, then another 30miles back + all the other travelling i do i want a nicer car, bit more power, bit more comfortable and doesnt leak.i have been looking at pugs, 207 sport's and the gt, civics, focus's. i tried getting insured on the gt which is only a group 6, but some insurance companies said no and others said £5000.:|then last night i was speaking to dan ko, hes getting insured on a merc clk or summat group 16 insurance or summat under his dads name for hardly anything considering what group it is and he hasnt been driving a year yet.so i was wondering if any of you lot are under your mum/dads names and who your with cause £5000 is a joke. Fish-Finger-er
at a guess, loads of people are. but its illegal in most cases, hence the reason i dont bother with it.if your wiling to buy summit a couple of years old or more, youll often find the insurance drops heavily. dont know your age, or your risk of postcode.but stuff like early e46 318's and the like are 140 bhp, but dont come to high on the insurance.also if ur willing to get an old shape focus, 2.0 zetec z, is 150 bhp,(same power as buckys van, for anyone thats counting, and probably not a million miles off on the weight).and is group 8 insurance. focus's are common as muck, parts are cheap, therefore repairs are cheap,as theres loadsa about, u can pick a minter when you buy one, as theyll be plenty to look at it. for those who think its legal to insure a car in your parents name, your insuring it with them as the main driver, and you as the second driver, if you drive it more than them, you are the main driver.therefore your providing the insurer with false information, thus invalidating your insurance. so if you crash, your insurers may not pay out, what usually happens then, is the courts will force your insurance company to compensate the victim. your insurance company can then legally recoup any costs incurred(so compensation, plus there legal costs in the bit between your insurance company and the victim, and then any costs incurred in them gettin there cash off you). which leavs you out of pocket, seriously (£15000 car, 2 whiplash claims of £2000 each, and a couple of grand in legal costs), easily leaves you £20,000 out of pocket, and thats if you do summit like that, sideswipe that £55k x5 on the motorway, carrying a doctor, his wife, and 2 kids, forcing them into the central reservation and into the path of oncoming traffic, and the costs will run possibly into the millions. thats before the next time you apply for insurance and you have to answer the bithave you ever been declined insurance, and you say yes, and end up payin over twice the price. or the police get involved for you driving without insurance. CurtisRider
i have a 2000 seat toledo (leon with a bum) 1.9tdi 110se, and thats group 6on my own it was 2200 (cheapest i could find, and with a company that allows upgrades without charging shitloads more, like bigger alloys, its more like 2500-3000) after driving for just over a month, but on my dads insurance it is 800quid (but thats with co operative(cis) and they dont allow ANY modifications to the car-c**ts)thats fully comprehensive too, 3rd party really wasnt much less, and isnt even worth considering as the cars worth a bitif you are doing high mileage, are you sure you want a petrol car? its gonna be expensive to run if you are getting a higher performance car
Gavyn.
when i'm 17 and get my provisinal i'll automatically be insured on my dads car through his company insurance for an extra 10 quid a month but i've also been getting quotes on various cars so my mum can decide what she wants to get before i can drive, i think she's going for a 1.9 tdi golf so i should be insured on that as a named driver too
JTM
From what Ive seen so far, Dan Ko is an idiot when it comes to cars etc. So wouldnt use him as an example. Just how he comes accross, sorry. If you have no no claims, you gonna get shafted its simple as. Thats how it works, you build up no claims, increased age, insurance goes down. Theres no easy simple way of getting cheap insurance. Get your own policy and bite the bullet and pay high insurance on a shit car for a while. No point going on your parents insurance, been there, done it, and you get no gain from it
PaRtZ
have you tried ecar insurance? They seem to be pretty nice to me at the moment But to be honest because you're young you will ALWAYS be paying a higher premium, regardless of what car you have. 17 year old males have the highest insurance premium going. Don't be surprised if you get something around £1200 for a shitty car either. Somehow though, my mate has a 218i rover coupe (yes its old but its soo nice, 1.8 too ), hes insure it on his mums name with him as the driver for £1000 so yeah i wouldn't look at any nicer cars until you're about 20 ish. My parents pay about £100 a year for a landrover defender (40+ years of ncb) so it does come down as you get older
James_Porter
just found a deal for £550 for 11 months on a gt with my mum as the main driver.
sfboy
The process of 'fronting' is considered insurance fraud, even just using it to drive to college or work would invalidate the policy and 1000s of policies have been cancelled. I have just insured my civic for 1600 with elephant, which isn't too bad considering I'm only 20 with no NCB and it's a group 10 car. trials_pimp
Dude whats the rush to have a fast car?The whole reason early insurence is soo high is because your not experience enough to drive powerfull cars. Also on your mums insurence you wont be getting no claims bonus, which will give you a massive discount on your insurence as time goes.If you want my opinion, and this is what I did, get a shit small car to start, just get yourself some experience and some NCBs under your belt.example, me.Ive been driving 4 years, nad have 3 years no claims (1st year under mothers name)Just insured my car again, 1.6 C reg Escort.£310 fully comp.Yea its not fast, or amazing by any sense, but it does the job, is exreemly cheap to run and leave me alot more money each month to spend on having fun, and preparing a decent car for when I can afford to insure it.Ive seen too many people get a fast powerfull car to start with, use 90% of their pay check to insure it each month. They then cant come out with friends very offen, and most of them end up writing the car off because they werent experienced enough to handle it.Take my advice, get something under 1.5l so you get cheap tax and insurence then when your older you will have the no claims to insure something monster. Also if you have a cheap car and do have an accident your more likely to be able to affford to skip the insurence and pay out your pocket, thus saving NCB
Nuke Bowel
I can see i'm going to be having the same trouble as you.My dad has a ford focus 2 litre, chipped, fully modified.I would personally rather spend my money on insuring that, than buying a new car and insurance, my own tax, mot etc.My dad hardly uses it and he's just bought me a new alpine audio set up allready.Could any one roughtly tell me how much it would cost?Cheers Luke. JTM
A "normal" car such as a fiesta etc unmodded, you can pass off as the 2nd driver no probalem. Idiots like Dan Ko and the guy with the GT above, when they crash these, they WILL, especially the merc look into it. Ive known them to go so far as to ask neighbours who drives the cars mainly etc. You will slip up and then you will be left with £1000s of damage. That focus is ruined, what maccys car parks does your dad attend? Or is it halfords car parks? And what other tuning mods does it have?! James_Porter
so you're looking at 100,000 miles a year if you keep up your milelage???nah i wont be traveling as much now i have started my new job.jtm, your last comment has well and truely pissed me off, you have no right calling either me or dan ko an ideot. and saying that we are going to crash is just stereotyping all 17 year olds as "boy racers" with no sence, yes i still have a lot to learn but that doesnt mean i cant learn in a nicer car?i have done the same amount of miles in the last month and a bit as a lot of new drivers do in the first year... im not saying im a good driver, i dont think anyone can... but i am careful.the gt is 110 bhp, 20bhp more than the sport which i was looking at before i found out i could get insured on the gt... the reason i am getting the gt over the sport is mainly cause it works out cheaper, sure the extra power helps with my decision, thats mainly cause there are so many hills around here you need it to get up them, my car at the moment is a 78bhp 306 and it struggles getting up most the hills round here and uses loads of fuel doing it.to be honest i dont give a shit what most people say on this forum anymore, everyone thinks they know best. all i asked was who people were insured with... i didnt ask for anyones opinion on how much of an ideot they thought i was. JTM
its idiot mate, not ideot lol Sorry i found that ironic.I didnt mean you or Dan are idiots, but its a very dumb way of looking at insurance.Mainly from your point of view, you will get no benefit out of it. In a few years time, when your used to paying 3/400 quid for insurance, and then want a nice car, and want your own policy, you will be back up to £2000 so LISTEN to what people are telling you, get your own policy now and save the agro in the long term. And ive never heard Dan Ko say anything useful or remotely helpful/factful, he sticks badges to his car and has 18in "rims". So im gonna keep my internet based judgment of him set to "idiot", cos i can Edited December 31, 2006 by JTM

Do what everyone else does and spends hours putting your details into websiteshave done, but i think ill need to find a specialist site because most modern sights only do the modern minis which are 1.4's to 1.6's i think. JTM
I dont think there is to be honest. If hes got a bluefin, then he hasnt got cams. So what other stuff has he got? An induction kit and exhaust is hardly what id call engine mods. So whats he got?"Turns alot of heads" haha how many times have I seen that on a chavved up ebay motor? Im guessing its not actually a ST170? Chavved imo, sorry
