PaRtZ
Ive done a search and cant find anything. Basically for koxx days me and will (will arnold) were thinking about buying a van off ebay and driving it abroad so we can fit all the bikes in, sleep in etc etc. Ive done a bit of research last 2 nights, and it seems that so long as the van weight is under the limit of my current license (ie under 3500kg) , All i need is:a V62 document from the post office (which will give me a V5 or a V5c which will let me drive the vehicle abroad)Insurance for a month, with me and will as drivers itll be about £300 a month which is reasonable i think considering our positionsMy passport and other doucments ie insurance certificates etc.and thats it really. Now i may be just being paranoid but that seems a bit simple? I don't need an European license because france and germany are countries in the EU so im ok there. So yeah can anyone think of anything else?
Tomm
How old are you? I thought you had to be 21 and 3 years driving experience before driving on the continent?

So yeah can anyone think of anything else? You will only need a V62 from the post office if a vehcle you buy doesnt have a V5 log book. The V5 logbook has nothing to do with whether you can drive abroad or not, its the registration document DVLA issue to you when you become the registered keeper of the vehicle. Basically, when you look at buying any vehicle there should be a V5 document for it, if there isnt it can get complicated. When you drive in europe its a good idea to take a copy of the V5 log book with you just incase you get stopped, this is also where you will need proof of valid insurance and your driving licence.A full UK driving licence should be fine to drive in France, although im not sure on the age limitations or the length of time you have to have held a full licence for.I really think you are wasting your time buying a van just for koxx days, all you need is a car and a tent, hell if there is only 2 people you dont even need a tent and could sleep in the car

So yeah can anyone think of anything else?well obiviously needs taxing and a current MOT, personally if i were gunna do this, id try an borrow a van off someone, and be named drivers on it. as a lot of vans sold on places like ebay, for peanuts, will be super unreliable. other things wen travelling in france which youll need. spare bulbs, warning triangle etc . everyone who is in the van, who will get out if its broke down, will require a fluorescent jacket(so best to carry one each). headlamp deflectors etc.wouldnt advise doing it myself.as driving abroad isnt pleasant, let alone in a vehicle your not used too(specially a van), and may not be reliable. also you sure the insurance covers you for european driving, and that youve got european break down covers.cost of a van thatd be reliable, would be £1000ish at least.insurance -£300, all the other gubbins = £200ish. plus u got the hastle of findin a van in the first place, gettin it back to urs, sticking it in your name, its gunna be expensive for a couple of days. wud probly be cheaper to buy a big old reliable car(mondeo, 406 ,vulva etc) with a towbar on it, and buy/beg/borrow a trailer tent, comfier, more reliable.more secure as far as bikes are concerned, more room to sleep. probably cheaper on the insurance, definitely cheaper in the first place, and the risk isnt as big, ur van blows up, u lost £1000, a £350 car goes bang, which its less likely too, and ur £600 trailer tent comes to a stop, then it all gets recovered home, and u can sell the trailer tent for wat u payed near enough.EDIT : or why not just get a towbar on one of ur current cars, get a smallish homemade trailer for a couple of hundred quid, will be under the weight limit of what you can tow with your licence/car, put bikes/big tent in that, stuff in the boot, and wham bam, ur away, and a trailer always comes in handy. PaRtZ
Well the reason I wanted a van was because theres gna be 5 of us going and 2 cars = twice the fuel and hassle. Plus its a bit of fun, its something I've wanted to do for a while. I forgot to say we're actually planning on going to germany for a week before hand too so it will be heading that way too. Im not overly keen on a trailer because of the fact if something happens ie it falls off, theres nothing I can do except watch other cars crash into it
CBProductions
Oh yeah I thought on these new license's you had to be over 21 to drive any commercial vehicles and also to drive abroad you need a minimum of 2 or 3 years I think. I hope this isnt the case as this trip is sounding good.
