Baffled After Reading Lots...

not technical stuff, more about what to buy?

been looking D50 for a while now, then the D40 came out and is forcing me to decide earlier than i planned as there wont be many D50s around for much longer unless i go second hand. so its D50 Vs EOS 350 or maybe the 400.

the main problem i have are all the different prices, read that you can get EOS 400 for £490 with a lense to get started but some places have it a lot more. D50s priced at around £380ish while stocks last etc.

basically, im need some opinions to help me decide. D50, EOS 350, EOS 400..dont fancy the D40 though.

Na don't get the D40, espically since it only takes AF-S lenses. So I know a few of mine won't work on it, even though there digital lenses.

D50 is good, don't bother with the twin lens kit as the 55-200 is pretty naff. Better off starting with the 18-55mm kit lens then getting like a Sigma or whatever telephoto later on.

Even better still, if you can try and get a D50 body and buy or somehow pick up a nikon 18-70mm (D70, D80 kit lens) as this is better.

The 400D has replaced the 350D with 10mp, more AF points and a self cleaning sensor. If you can afford it and what not, probably better to go with the 400D.

There is one main difference between the two is how they handle, the nikon tends to be a bit bigger, but not a lot as the D50 is the smaller entry level camera if you like. A lot of people tend to compare the 400D with the D80, and they feel quite different, the Nikon being bigger and heavier which some people prefur, some don't depending on how big your hands are I suppose.

Both excellent cameras and you won't be disappointed with either one in terms of image quality and performance, it's a matter of going into a shop and trying them both out before you buy.

I really like the fact my 350D's small and light, but there we go, which is why I don't really want to go for the big heavy bolt on plastic kit. Shit, sorry, I meant "Ultra cool, look at me I'm pro" battery grip.

To be honest, having had to use Nikon D70 and D70S (I think)'s at uni, I just hate the feel, sound, bulk and way you have to use them. I just don't really like anything about them, apart from how easy it is to change the ISO, but that's about it. I'd go for the Canon every time, but like they said, cop a feel of them all and see what you like. Oh, and I hate the viewfinders on Nikons :)

To be honest, there really isn't much difference between Nikons and Canons performance wise. Both will give you excellent photos just as good as the other.

There always seems to be this huge raging war between Nikon and Canon, when in reality, there isn't much difference.

Just go to the shop and try them both out, I eventually picked the D70s because I much prefered the way it felt, I thought it fitted in my hand much better and felt less plasticky. However, Mark for example, felt the exact opposite.

It's all personal preferance, go out to a shop and see how they feel and choose the one you like best, because to be honest there won't be much difference performance wise.
