TomR
My mate Dave at works into drag racing and told me a hilarious story once that proves your knowledge of cars help more than how much you spend on them. There were these 2 guys on a RWYB meet, one was in an oldskool ford (mk2 escort i think), the other a scooby running silly amounts of power. They did a run and the ford won, the guy in the scooby got a bit arsey (as he's spent LOADS on his car) and said "oh it needs tweaking a bit, its just been rebuilt so it's not running spot on". So off they go, the scooby guy tweaks his car, has another run against mr oldskool ford and loses - again. (and by a fair bit of time too). Now this guys getting irate at losing and kicks up a fuss for no reason, then says "ok we'll have another run, but i'll go and turn up the NOS again" to which the oldskool ford chap goes "oh, you were running NOS? I better go and hook mine up then" at which point EVERYONE dropped to the floor in fits of laughter at the look on the scooby drivers face, he looked absolutely gutted. the scooby guy didnt even bother trying again and started going off on one. I think the guy in the ford spend a quater or a third less on tuning his car than the scooby guy did but he spent the money on the right things. Whats the engine in it or is it another twin-engined jobby? My jaw actually dropped watching it, soo quick through and out of the corners, though looks like a bit of a handful lol

MadManMike
go on youtube and search for "red devil golf" - that's a beast and a half.and on the subject of DeLoreans - I'ts sweet! I love 'em!
nmt_oli
This thread has amused me greatly! I do love it how people just don't seem to understand on the internet.I think that delorean is a pretty damn cool car, i do not deny its failings as a succesful selling car, but as a concept it was very good. Its styling is excellent, the doors were inavative for the time, (not many cars have gulwing doors as std) and having the body work in uncovered stainless is very very different.Maybe the car would have beel less of a flop if it actually achieved its origonal suspected power figures that the designer wanted.I think its good someone has decided to soup up a delorean, just to see what they can do. Im not fussed by the result on the drag strip, if the guy likes his car, enjoys driving it and get a smile, thats what matters! Some people laugh at my car, some think im a boy racer, some love my car- either way its my car, a lot of time and effort has gone into it, i like it and i will do how i like with it. Please, respect others opinions people thats all im asking.Oh, and future orange 660- Nicks a great guy, friendly, helpful, and has picked up a lot of knowledge in his time spent with cars- no one who knows him will say otherwise. He is also entitled to his opinion, and if you notice any thing hes not sure of he will specify, and he also states when somethings his opinion rather than fact. nmt_oli
Mercedes 300SL with GullWing doors, circa 1955 Ok, maybe inovative was not the best word to use, however i still stand by the fact that few cars have them, especially ones with such a low origonal sale price as the Delorean. I also belive ( i think i am correct) the Delorean doors had slightly more clever hinges then most, allowing fairly heavy doors- not relying on ultralight ones. trialkid
Inavative maybe, practical? i think not! Imagine if u were in a fairly tight parking space, o dear i cant get out! even lambo doors would probably be slightly more practicle in that situation. they are cool, iconic cars but wow someones tuned one and its fast! NO way! if u put enough money into just about anycar it could hit up a quarter mile in 13 seconds, well ok not jus any car but u get my drift. i have seen a video of a delorean with a stage 2 engine and it does sound facking lovely! nmt_oli
Who said it had to be practical? It was concieved as a 2 seater sports car if im not mistaken, using new manufacturing techniques and a lot of different ideas. Its good that designers think outside the box, so what if it was a flop? How would anything great come about if people didn't try things, products fail all the time, ideas go wrong, people learn from there mistakes. This car has a lovely 80s styling to it, gull wing doors and a finish no other car has (plus it wont rust). It failed mainly because its production techniques werent as suitable for mass production as origonally hoped, and the engine was below the designers origonal power figure, before emmisions restrictions took another 40bhp off. This ruined the performance, and it became sub standard for a sportscar. And yes, you do need 11 inches at the side of the car to be able to open the door, but even with my car its a bit awkard to get out of the car with just 11" to open the door into.Your also right that anycar can be made fast with money, and its not nessesarily money- its time and effort. This has already been discussed.Edit: spelling, just noticed how appaulign it was!) Edited December 18, 2006 by nmt_oli

It always will be an iconic car, and as somebody said before, I challenge any person who see's one on the road not to stop and stare in awe, cos they're rare as hell! The biggest mistake they ever made was letting the Irish build it though! Rich Pearson
It's at times like this that I'm blissfully happy that I know sweet F.A. about cars. Oh, and ANYONE who has had to try and keep up with Prawn down some obscure cornish road and then had to listen to him talk about powerbands and torque ratio's for three hours will testify to how good a driver he is.Rich
