Magure Hs33 Haters

Hi,

You know what - I really don't understand why so many riders use HS33 as a brake. I used to have

2 different models (one from 2003 and one from 2005) and for me they were just a crap. Right now

I have Avid SD7 which is PERFECT (perhaps Shimano XT is good also). So if there are other HS33 haters ;)

please post some info here ;)

maguras on the front are awful, i have one on my monty and hate it, however on the rear i love a magura, ali's ultimate lever and caliper feels amazing but its a 120 quid set up. a magura is like 120 a pair!

A well set up magura shouldnt ever slip. and bleeding one is hardly effort.

a maggie is the last ever brake I would ever want to put on the front of my bike!!! I just dont see the point.

anyway, a rear vee is awesome, much more holding power than a maggie and 100x more adjustable

100 times more adjustable not quite  hs33 are as adjustable as a v, but i cant argue about wich one is better because i have never tryed a v :) .

What about a u brake.

To be honest i haven't noticed any difference when i changed from vee to maggie.

Edit: I lie, maggie is much better.

Damn it got found. :rolleyes::P

Was expecting at least another hour before someone found it.

Edit: Just to clarify, my maggie is on the back, would never have one on the front. Vee all the way.

I hated my front HS33, just didn't lock, no matter what pads.

Front BB7 now. :D(Y)

Rear HS33 is alright, has it's annoying occasions, where one pad wont move back, bleeding it, setting it up perfectly.

But now i've sorted it out properly, it's mint again - Click the link in my signature. ;)

So i'll admit that V's are better in that way, but I reckon they feel the same. - Obviously depending on the V's set-up.

maggies, are definitely a good brake but they are such a pain in the ass. i have had three magura's and on all of them the little red adjuster on the front or on the blade of the newer magura's has broken on all of them within about a month everytime!! plus once you get water or greece/wd40 or something similar they don't hold at all, so much hassle.

i just keep buckling my rear rim. and i guess that's a nightmare for mags..

plus the thought of having to drain them sounds a little like hard work.

1. A buckled wheel is the same for any rim brake, if it's buckled enough, it'll rub. Just get the wheel trued.

2. Bleeding Maguras is the easiest thing ever. If you've never done it before, or have no idea how it's done, then it seems like there's some sort of black magic, or special technique to doing it.

But there isn't.

I've tried around 3-4 different ways of bleeding my one, and all of them have worked.

Just search the forum, and have a read how it's done.

They're simple to service, just a shame you might have to do it a lot. :turned:

is it just because of the weather that it swells or are there other reasons for having to bleed them?

No way, Magura is the best. I've tried my friend's bike, he's got V-brakes, and it is awful. It feels spongy, I barely had any control. My Magura works perfect. I bleed it once a month and use silicone spary to clean and lubricate it.

By the way I have a question. I don't use the origian Magura oil to bleed it, insted a use antifreeze. What do you use?

Just finished making my new vee adapters and booster, all out of 10mm aluminium, and oh dear lord, this back brake has the most hold i have ever felt in a rear brake :o thats with a Dewhore rear brake, roll on avid ultimate (Y)

I've always prefered the feel of hydrolics over cables - just feels smoother and no cable stretch.

I've never tried an expensive V brake though, perhaps with better cable they perform better.

As far as hold/bite goes, I don't think there would be much difference as long as the pads are good.
