Josephine
LMAO what a complete pile of bullshit this is. English can't spell properly? and the Americans spell better? HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHConsidering over 60% of americans cant even draw their own damn country even vaguely right and have no clue about anything other than america i think that is a bloody bold statement to make. Americans have the shittest form of education system i have ever heard of consisting of the following:Multiple choice examshome schooling online (lmao)Not being able to study a science until you can pass algebra (no form of "core" subjects up to gcse level)E.t.c.Atleast we arent lazy enough to omit letters from dictionary words such as colour --> color. Bit off-topic, methinks? It's easy to dislike Americans, please do it somewhere else.Anyway, yeah English people suck at English. I speak French and German pretty well(ish) and having spent a while in each of these countries it's fairly safe to say that foreigners studying English generally have a better grasp of grammar than English people. This is mainly due to it not really being taught; it's just assumed that you'll pick it up as you go along. Seems odd to me that the greatest contribution to my understanding of English grammar came from studying other languages...Spelling doesn't bother me too greatly; it's often easy enough to see what people meant to say and, let's face it, English spelling is all over the place. We're taught the phonetic sounding system, but it often doesn't apply. Grammar and punctuation are the biggest problems. If someone lacks these skills it can seriously impair your written communication. Punctuation is what turns an incomprehensible string of words into a meaningful bit of prose. There are plenty of little oddities of grammar that I can let go, for example; you're not ever supposed to end a sentence with a preposition (so 'The English f**k English up.' becomes 'The English f**k up English.' etc.).'Txt tlk' in texts I can understand, I do it, it saves me money, good plan. MSN etc. are kind of a halfway thing for me. I rarely, for instance, capitalise 'I's and sometimes my punctuation slips, but it's more like verbal communication, insofar as it's spontaneous and mistakes are inevitable, but just think how mind-numbing it would've been to read that essay if I'd not punctuated. I almost guarantee you wouldn't have bothered. I doubt many of you will get this far even with the punctuation Which brings me onto emoticons, they're bloody fantastic, really add tone to what you're trying to say, which is something only previously accomplishable with speech, really.Joe xP.S. One huge gripe, it's 'should have' or whatever modal verb you want to use with 'have'. You cannot say 'should of', it's nonsense (the confusion comes from the contraction of 'should have' to 'should've'). You cannot say "I of done this gap." so you cannot say "I should of done this gap."; simple. Edited December 11, 2006 by Josephine
dave85
"Should've" and "should of" sound very similar in my accent, its just one of those things that gets mistaken once and perpetuated. To my mind, a lot of slang and bad wording of things comes when you're working hard under difficult conditions. Its rare that academics speak badly, but (for instance) engineers and mechanics with a similar level of education will swear, curse and generally abuse the language to get their point across. I hate people who take it upon themselves to assume something that is untrue. Almost as if someone is trying to put words in to my mouth. Bennnn
To be honest, I find the spelling, grammer and punctuation on this forum to be quite a bit more advanced than on ObservedTrials.net. I'd consider myself quite acedemic. I never used to swear that much before I started work. However, now, practically every other word is "f**k" or "s**t". I never used to perve (as much, lol) on girls in the street...but now I find myself wolf-whistling, and just generally being a chouvanistic pig. SOmething which I never thoguht I would be two years ago.Working with other men really does bring out the worst in you, haha.

eskimo
love in this topic how everyone's punctuation and spelling is immaculate, capital letters, fullstops:PMines top notch since i got validated Although i should be I. But that just sucks. So i don't even bother with it.
Barbra
I can actually type the correct spelling for words faster than i can type text talk. Although most of the time my punctuation and grammar and stuff isn't usually amazing, at least you can read what i am typing. Touch type for the win! Davey
Your statements "a bit shite" and "less relevent", regarding my statements or expressions are true to your mind, relative to your value system. So I accept that you are "right" in that sense. In contrast though, I don't place the same values as you do upon my previous expressions. With my value system I see my expressions as relevent, in the subjective relationship between myself and the context with which they reside in. I do not have to follow the exact request of a post. I see it how I see it and act accordingly based on what matters to me. I can't really make reference to your value system and act on that. I wouldn't want to either. I would hope the same from you. When communication is expressed, there appears no objectively right or wrong way to send it or return it. We can only say right or wrong relative to ourselves. It is not right or wrong seperate to ourselves, as individuals.Maybe I'm still wrong in the objective sense? I guess that's upto you to decide Haha, now who's trying to look smart Yawn *jokes*

All I can say is Paul and yourself should be ashamed. Paul picks fat bird, and you pick, I dont even know what she was? Funny either way, LOL!But back on the topic at hand. Anyone that knows me, will know me as someone who always writes in full english. Text messages, msn or emails. I only just scraped a C in english at GCSE(by like 1 mark scrapage). This doesn't mean I have to type like a retard. Does it really take that much longer to type properly. Yes I can swear, but it all depends on what im swearing about, and in front of ladies, thats just incalled for. lmao, that above paragraph is shit, i always swear and stuff, My real opinion is that if people want to talk like retards, let them, aslong as its to themselves. LEARN TO TYPE PROPERLY!

RicH_87
who cares honestly, language evolves over time, in most cases for the worst but still, people in 1900 spoke and wrote the english language so differently to today, it could be classed as a different language all together.no language stays the same forever so who is to say there's a 'right' and a 'wrong' way of spelling everything in the first place.---if you want to be a pedantic arsehole about spelling, become a lecturer, otherwise shut the f**k up, because no one on the internet gives a shit. 1a2bcio8
Yeh I read all sorts these days Raub. A contributing factor as to why I don't really ride anymore.I don't agree with yesterdays space/time ben as much now. That was a tired and angry expression regarding frustration fueled by the chronic pain I'm suffering from. Sometimes I don't realise that my perception has been distorted by it. I did actually misread a lot of what people said. I guess I read it how I wanted to I still think I was right in the relative sense of myself at that time

Trebor
I still think I was right in the relative sense of myself at that time Haha, aren't we all?To keep on topic, typing poorly itself isn't a haneous crime. It just seems to represent the person typing it, in that they appear to be very lazy and, compared to the millions of other people that write in english on the internet (regardless of their country of origin), kinda dumb.Having said that - so long as the post itself can be understood, which only doesn't happen if Pete Wright is trying to type very quickly, then there's nothing to really bitch about as such. It would just be bitching for the sake of bitching which is totally uncool. Seaman's question seemed pretty harmless, logical too.
