Tom_
Black it is. My brother wants black not sure about having the exact same colour (also would anyone else agree that buying my 11 year old brother a nikon D40 is rediculous?) O well. Tomm
Black, duh. Silver cameras look cheap and ugly IMO. If you've got a choice, get the black every time.

Davetrials
D40 is pretty wank anyway.
Tomm
I have never used one...But they do look fairly basic as far as SLRs go. That's not always a bad thing.
Si-man
Well they don't make D50's anymore according to jessops...

Dan Clark
They sound pretty perfect for the average guy looking to get into photography. It's a full DSLR but is a lot easier to use, it's a good move by Nikon I think because there's no-one else really doing that. And of course, when people choose a brand they stick to it usually, so if a lot of people buy D40's as a way into photography, if they stick it's more likely they will upgrade to a better Nikon rather than a Canon, so ensure's future sales too. Tony Harrison
Well they don't make D50's anymore according to jessops...Yes, but if you're resourceful you'll find one new for the same price as a D40...
Dan Clark
There's still loads of D50's everywhere.
Tom_
There's still loads of D50's everywhere.Yea jessops has the D50 in for 329 body only, but im getting the D40 with lens for 400 and the D40 is smaller and lighter.Tom
Haz
Smaller isn't always better, it depends on your hands, I found the Canon 400D way too small for my hands, which drew me to the D80, which was bit bulkier and had a nicer feel. You really do have to try them out and see which one you like best, it's like all things, if you prefer a different model, of any make, but it's out of your price, maybe it's worth waiting and getting that.I was actually pleased with Jessops when I went in, the guy actually knew what he was talking about and let me have a decent play with any camera I wanted. Dan Clark
Yeah they aren't bad, let me have a big play with cameras, then they didn't have any D70s's in, so they ordered one and kept it back for me and I didnt have to pay a deposit.Guy didn't seem too clever though, said "the good about DSLR's is that you can change lenses", which I hope everyone who's buying a DSLR should know anyway. Tony Harrison
Yes, although beware anyone looking at the Fuji S9500 - it looks like a DSLR, but isn't, and the lens doesn't come off. Damn good camera though, and pretty good zoom range.

What a dumb ass lol.D40 has a nice big screen, but no top lcd, instead the settings come up on the back like the olympus, canon etc. It's nice enough and Dan is spot on with the leading into photography thing. Only thing is it only takes AF-S lenses, something to definatley bare in mind, when you get into it and want to upgrade lenses to find the one you want won't work with your camera, this is when you wish you got a D50. Fishwog
compact and bike bits....can take just as good a photos with a compact...its the camera that takes good pics...its the person whos taking the photosSo your saying someone could take a better BMX photo with a disposable, than with someone who has a 1DmkII, a 15mm Fisheye, and two flashes on Pocketwizards?General rule is that the camera helps ALOT, but purist's still try to tanger you into believing you do ALL of the work, which is not true, if it were, why would people spend tens of thousands of pounds on camera equipment?Same applies to people who think you should just get the picture right there and then, but tell me how often someone wins a photo competition without having spent hours on Photoshop post processing? If you want advice on camera equipment, don't post asking about it on here, join one of these forums:www.photography-on-the.netwww.photosapien.comwww.skateperception.comwww.photo.netwww.fredmiranda.comSam
