F-Stop Junkie
hi,i want to fit a smaller freewheel to my stock bike, currently i have a try-all 108 freewheel but i'd like a smaller size like a 16 or something.I think you'll struggle. I know the smallest Eno is not recommended for trials as you can't get decent sized pawls/bearings/something in them.Wouldn't it be easier to run a bigger sprocket at the back if you want a lower gear? steve@banbury-trials
i'm wanting to get a smaller sprocket aswell but keep the same ratio so i have more clearance and have my chain wrapped around my current sprocket more my tensioner jockey wheels catch the sprocket with my current setup .if you don't understand i'll put a picture up in the not so distant future
F-Stop Junkie
Surely if you just bosh on a smaller front freewheel, you'll also have to machine the bashring down to match?Depending on the tensioner, you should be able to adjust the angle of dangle from the frame, possibly with the little screw head on the back of the mech hanger.Smaller freewheels will only give a slight increase in clearance, but will also increase the tension on your chain, causing faster wear and a higher chance of breakages. I'd leave it as is and get your tensioner sorted.
Greetings
Just put in a smaller bashring. I used a 16 bash on a 18T chainring and it was a perfect fit. No need to change the freewheel.
Savage
The 108.9 is available in 16 17 & 18. So far only the 18's have been available, but should have some of the other sizes in about a week. I am going to try a 17 on my next bike to alter the gearing a bit.Ben.
