Photoshop Q's

Not sure if this is the right part of the forum so feel free to move me :-

Anyway, Having a couple of problems on photoshop and seeing some peoples stuff on here I'm sure someone can help me out.

If I want to have say a rider in colour and the background black and white, how do I do this? I've tried creating a new layer of the rider but I can't put any of the filters on just that layer.

Also, what the best way to get a good finish when doing a frame or something? Do most people use the polygonal (?) lasso tool? And how do you get the light right?

Any help appreciated.

Fastest way is to make a new layer by copying the background layer onto the new layer tab in the layers window. Then left click on this new layer, go to image> adjustments and desaturate> This'll turn it black and white. Then you do the same again with copying the background layer and place this as the top layer, the image will be in colour again. Left click this new coloured top layer, then select the eraser tool, choose an appropraite brush size and just wipe off the colour you dont need. Take care in detailed bits and use a giant brush to save time in large areas you want to have black and white.

Edit: As to doing the frame, just use whichever method you see most appropriate, either cut it out using a lassoo tool or use the eraser method, maybe a combination of botth... lossely lassoo the frame then erase the crap from round the edges.

The way i do it is to, select the 'pen tool' in the toolbar, then create a path by drawing round the shape, then correcting the edges with the add anchor tool, which is again in the toolbar, once ive gone round and all the edges are smooth il right click and 'make selection' then copy and paste this into its own new layer then desaturate or greyscale the origanal layer.

dont know if that makes any sense or will help you but thats how i do it :P

frame question

use the pen tool to draw a vector mask on your layer - i prefer this cos you can mess with it after

if you use paths as a base for selection you get nice antialiased edges - all the advantages of mods suggestion but freedom to edit after

Got it  . I can't get the light right on the rear end, makes it look a bit poor. Any tips?

you want to join the highlights up ?

usual tip

on a new layer....

draw a path the right size and shape using the pen

set your paintbrush to be small and white

select the little arrow tool (the one for selecting paths)

select the path, rightclick, stroke path (if you use the little tickybox on the stroke path dialog itll make the ends thin and the middle fatter - like a brush stroke)

then you can just twat about with opacity n stuff till it looks right

my basic photoshop pro-tips (i'm a pro me :D ) are ...

use the pen tool + stroke path any time you want a nice mathematical type shape (straight line/curve) drawn with the brush

always work on a new layer. BUT - be cautious when merging down to layers that do not have full opacity or use a funny blend mode as the upper layer will inherit these settings from the layer you're merging into.

vector masks and layer masks are your friend, they give you non-destructive editing power.

to change colours, brightness/contrast, levels etc. use an adjustment layer instead of the menu options - you can change your mind and they come with a layer mask built in

quick mask is great - you can use filters (like blur) on the quick mask

I think your pic looks alright, but if I was gonna quickly lighten the rear end..'s!

I'd ..... well do all those things in my history pallet. Make a duplicate image on new layer / adjust the brightness with `Levels` (ctrl + L) / take the eraser with a big soft brush and erase the middle of the adjusted layer and then flatten it etc.

poopipe's method is the deffo more in depth and professional, but sometimes that pen tool and layer mask's can be a bit `oh er` if your not used to them.

Anyway, that's a real quick way of doing it. Those layer mask's are cool though... up to you.
